Exam deferral

Has anyone had to defer an exam and if so what excuse did you use. I have a wedding the day before one of mine. It's an 'away' wedding so I won't be back in time. I'm reluctant to put that on the deferral form in case they tell me to just leave the wedding early and drive back. Any advice much appreciated.

Hey, I just saw your post now so hope this helps.

I had to defer two exams on medical grounds last summer thinking that it would only be a short term thing, that I could do them in August. (Temporarily lost vision!) The entire thing ended up with me being to sick to do the august repeats and having to spend the year 'repeating' 2 modules, assignments and exams because they wouldn't just let me continue into 3rd year and sit exams at another stage. Total waste of a year... so moral of the story is don't ever think that it will go smoothly or you'll end up in college forever like me!
Contact your head of school or your lecturer and explain the situation, they've probably heard much worse excuses for trying to get off an exam, plus the hassle and running around in the event that you can't do the repeat is NOT worth it!

    Good luck!

@OP: you need to think about what you're asking for here. A deferral effectively means you're seeking to put your first attempt back by about three months (to the August repeats). That confers a significant advantage on you vis-a-vis other students as you have three additional months to prepare for the exam. It is unlikely that such an advantage would be casually offered.

That said, I agree with the previous poster that you should raise it with the relevant lecturer asap but I'd be prepared to be disappointed by their response.

    Hi

From my experience you have not a hope of getting it deferred you will be told to get your priorities in order. What effectively you are saying it that you want preferential treatment in order to allow you to go drinking and have the craic at a wedding.

Go to the wedding abstain from alcohol and leave early. When August comes you will be thankful you do not have to sit that exam. As the previous poster says you could be ill in August and genuinely need to defer the exam.

    +1
Don't come back in August unless you really have to!
