    Mad stuff!

    http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/03/us-mazda-recall-spiders-idUSTRE72257620110303

(Reuters) - Mazda Motor Corp is recalling thousands of 2009/2010 vehicles over concerns that a build up of spider webs in the emissions system could lead to fuel tank cracks and possible leaks.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a summary of the problem that a certain type of spider may weave a web that restricts a vent line.

This could cause the emissions control system to increase pressure inside the fuel tank, leading to cracks and potential fuel leaks and an increased risk of fire.

Mazda is recalling 52,000 vehicles and dealers will install a spring to prevent this type of spider from entering the vent line, NHTSA said.

Since when have spiders been able to survive in the Catalytic Converter or exhaust.
Surely the heat would kill them off before they be making any off them webs

Has this actually been shown to happen or is it just a theoretical possibility?

They're gone mad altogether over there for the recalls

Either you're seriously underestimating how many spiders there are in the US, or you think the cat/exhaust are hot all the time. If someone left the car idle from 10pm - 7am, that's loads of time for a spider to get in and build webs - most female spiders can weave webs at a rate of 6 feet per minute ()

Better to catch it before it happens, and good to know that they're not leaving anything to chance with their cars. If anything I'd put more trust in them for it.

Wacky stuff ha? I was sure to check for a reputable news source for it! Still not sure it's not an early April Fools even with Reuters carrying it...

Just thinking now, my old Mazda was made in Hiroshima.... hmmm maybe we can't rule out mutant arachnids hitching a ride out of Japan just yet????

It would appear that yellow sac spiders do have some strange selective attraction to 4cyl Mazda 6's?

I know Michael O'Leary believes all publicity is good publicity, but surely no car manufacturer would dream up a recall as a quirky PR stunt?
