Windows failing to start: Corrupt Hardware??

Have an Acer laptop and was installing some software - got a message midway through saying there was potentially dangerous files(virus?) so I stopped downloading and went to restart the computer.

When it was restarting a black screen opened saying this..........
    Windows Boot Manager
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the Problem:
    1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
    2. Choose your language settings, and click “Next.”
    3. Click “Repair your computer.”
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
    File: \Windows\system32\config\system
    Status: 0xc000014c
Info: Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing, or corrupt.
    ENTER=Continue ESC=Exit

I've had a browse on google on my main PC for solutions and there seems to be nothing definite so far. Really frustrating.

Wonder if any boardsies can help here??

Really hope not to have to go back to the local repair lad, guy is a conman. I'm sure he makes the problems out to be worse to charge extra.........

Also worth noting I dont have the disc they are asking for, maybe I can download something?

    Any help appreciated??

All the reboot options just go back to the screen I posted above.

Not sure what to do now.

Just to clarify you have tried the following options on the Windows Advanced Menu...
    - Safe Mode
    - Last Known Good Configuration

I'd be preparing to get ready for a reinstall... i.e. making sure you have your information backed up, making sure you have relevant software CD/DVDs to reinstall, checking you have a Windows reinstall CD with proper code..

Yeah all options seem to lead back to that menu.screen I posted.

What version of Windows are you running? next step would be to boot to the install DVD and run a repair.. Do you have the DVD?
