nappy rash that won't go - itchy

my little one has a nappy rash that won't go - its been red raw over a week now. It appears to be itchy - its affecting sleep and baby is trying to scratch it.

I have tried every cream and powder.
I have tried using no wipes - just water.
I have tried cream for fungal nappy rash.

Nothing is working. My poor baby is so distressed with it. The skin is bleeding in some place and where healing is nearly peeling.

    Anyone experienced anything like this?
    Would love any suggestions!

I suggest bringing your baby to the GP, there are other reasons the bum may be sore, such as thrush.

    !

This may be the problem :o

You say you've tried using just water? How long did you just use water for? Do you use Vaseline at all?

My little lad started getting a rash from those "water wipes" that are supposed to be completely free of chemicals.. So since then all I will use is warm wet cotton wool and loads of Vaseline and he's never had a problem since.. his bum is clear as a whistle..

The poor little thing, sounds very distressing for you both :o good luck with it..

sounds like thrush. go to the doc, she'll give you a weak steriod. i used to sit jacob in the kitchen sink (coolish water) for a wash and let him roam without a nappy for 15 minutes or so to dry (no towel). it was so so sore but he got over it. vaseline is great preventative, but to clear it up you need a steriod.

If is it thrush, applying live yoghurt to the area will help and if it comes straight from the firdge, it will be quite cooling and soothing.

    Definately visit your GP.

As other posters have said, plenty of water contact, sit him in the bath a couple of times a day and only use cotton wool and water to cleanse. Reduce the amount of creams you use and if you can leave his little botty bare for a while, letting the air at his botty will help. Increase the amount of fluids he's getting to make his pee more dilute, and try to avoid fruit juices.

Also, if he's in pain, give him a bit of calpol or infant nurofen.

Thanks so much for all the replies - have a GP appt later so hope it will be diagnosed if is thrush.

Never thought to not use anything at all:o - will give that a go as well

I am actually wondering if it could be the brand of nappies - we had to switch brands last week as the usual were not available.

    Thanks again!

You might have hit the nail on the head here but just to be sure mention everything to your GP and he/she will get to the bottom of it.
    Good Luck again OP

Its always worth a trip to the GP if you are worried.

We used a mix of Lassers paste and sudo cream which was recommended the 1st time our lad got a bad nappy rash. It cleared it up quickly and we used it any time there was any redness. He never suffered again from nappy rash.
Our 2nd we did the same at the first sign of redness, and he has never had a nappy rash.
    Good luck with it.

Well, its not thrush = he thought it did look like more of an irritation so to try switching back the nappies and take record of things she eats the days it is worse but also mentioned could be teeth. So...I've left knowing none the wiser, really.

My 2 are sensitive to pampers and huggies, we just use Lidl nappies all the time.
I have been through something similar with my daughter ( some creams and caldesen powder made it worse to the point of bleeding)
However there is a cream, very very effective and very very cheap! Boots Caster oil and xinc, is about 2euro and it is the business. Always thought it was the same as sudocream, but apparently the castor oil is a treatment in itself for skin problems.
I like to put it on and then add a layer of corn flour for extra moisture control.
    Good luck with it.

My daughter seems to get a rash when her teeth are coming down.

Also Huggies nappies dont agree with her.

Thank you both very much - its pampers that we had temporarily used so back to LIDL nappies! We are trying the air dry and using no product at the minute but will deffo look for that Boots cream! Thanks again!

Hi. I hope your little one is feeling better. When my eldest was getting her teeth, she use to suffer with nappy rash and the only thing that worked for me, was I use to sit her in a bath of just water twice or sometimes 3 times a day! No lotions in the water at all, then when she got out I would leave her nappy off for up to an hour. When I put the nappy back on I would apply sudocrem, and it worked a treat, cleared the rash up with in 2 days!

    Good luck x

Likewise with the castor oil cream although the one i used was morhulin cream.. the oil sticks to the skin and lets nothing through. When babies are teething they're urine and poo is more acidic and left in contact with the skin for long it breaks down the skin . . ;)

I learned the hard way with my first and the 2nd and 3rd so far haven't had anything more than slight rash. . i use pampers and i used the orange pack for a few days a few weeks ago and his bum got sore.. I dumped them and went back to the ordinary ones and he's grand since. . :)

Sounds like teething rash to me.
The best nappy paste I use is actually 'home-made' and recommended to me by the good nurses in Crumlin Children's Hospital. This should ONLY be applied to UNBROKEN SKIN!

Mix 1/3 orabase (available in chemists) with 2/3 of vaseline. Mix the paste up good.

To use on nappy rash, wipe baby's bum with cotton balls & water (or use olive oil - as it softens the cotton ball against baby sore skin), wipe some olive oil onto baby's bum, then apply a good amount of paste onto areas prone to rash - apply a nice layer onto skin... this helps nappy rash & provides a barrier to rash getting worse.
    :)
