    Received this by email today

    Dear ....

As a valued customer we want to let you know that 2011 will
bring exciting changes in the energy market with greater choice
    for residential customers.

As you may know the Irish electricity market has been opening
to competition gradually over the last ten years. The final stage
in this process will be the de-regulation of ESB's residential
supply business in the next few months. A condition for this
final stage is that ESB must re-brand our supply business and
we are doing this so that we can compete fully for residential
customers and offer greater choice in the market.

We are changing our name from ESB Customer Supply to
ESB Electric Ireland. We will still be part of the ESB Group,
together with ESB International and ESB Networks who will
continue to provide network services to all electricity customers.

Our new name describes clearly who we are and the services
we provide to the people of Ireland. For the rest of this year
you will see ESB Electric Ireland on correspondence, emails,
    advertising material and other literature.

Over the coming months we will be offering you new energy
packages and services to suit your needs. These will include
competitive gas prices and new electricity price options offering
you better value and control of your energy costs. We will tell
you more about these offers in the next few months.

For now, I would like to thank you for being our customer and
we look forward to meeting all your energy needs in the future.

    Yours sincerely,
    ...
    ESB Electric Ireland

Yes it was in the media weeks back and that letter was inserted in every bill. What point are you trying to raise?

    Hi srameen
I never received this with any of my Esb bills.
It seems to be that the de-regulation of the Esb in the next few months will be complete and hopefully reduce our esb bills sooner rather than later. That is all.

Are you an ebilling customer? The communication quoted above went out to all ebilling customers yesterday. Customers receiving physical bills by post, on the other hand, would have had it included as part of a bill insert.

FYI, you can find the original press release in relation to the name change here.

We're very much looking forward to de-regulation and fully competing in the residential market, and really appreciate the interest shown by customers like yourself in this regard.

    We'll keep you posted! :)

    Thanks,

    David.

The energy regulator will allow the ESB to set its own electricity prices for residential customers from April 4.

    Hold on a second ..
is not the brand "ESB Electric Ireland" a grammatical redundancy similar to 'ATM Machine' (Automatic Teller Machine Machine) or PIN Number (Personal Identification Number number)..

    Hmmm

Dont forget Allied Irish Bank Bank, so good we had to bail them out twice.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

    Hi Armelodie,

The full brand name ESB Electric Ireland is temporary; we are retaining ESB in the title only during the transitional phase, until it becomes simply "Electric Ireland" (in the same way that Hibernian Aviva became "Aviva").

Introducing the new brand was one of a number of CER conditions for ESB's Energy Supply Businesses to receive regulatory freedom to compete in the domestic market. You can find further info here.

    Thanks,

    David.
