received an email at work today:
    Important.

We know you have purchased the fantastic HTC desire from us in the past. This phone has proven very popular and a great asset to any business. However, we have just been informed that all HTC Desire handsets have a new update available.

Unfortunately the update has a critical flaw. Should you accept the download the handset will power off and then get stuck in a constant loop.
There is nothing that can be done except return the device for repair.

We know XXXXX Ltd have received HTC Desire handsets off us in the past and we really don’t want this to happen to you!

The slides below shows you, in a step by step guide, how to make sure your Desire doesn’t auto install the update so you don’t have to endure this inconvenience.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

    Kind Regards,
    XXXXXX

Sounds like a load of BS and maybe malicious.

The last Desire update was in December and next one isn't due until June.

All HTC Desire handsets don't get updates at the same time for starters. Seems like a really strange email, possibly from a paranoid, ill informed phone provider.
