Try the European Climate Assessment & Dataset (ECA&D) project

Ah, true, I just looked at the list, saw a few african countries and presumed subsaharan africa was there too.

    Try here

Can't you just add up the monthly rainfalls?

Hi, I was thinking that , but I don't think it gives a unit for precipitation measurement ,(like mm),and I need to reference the source of information I used for the rainfall data in an essay-that page with the data disappears after a week or so,I'm not sure if I can reference it ..but it seems the best source of data so far so I may have to use it,thanks

I think you'll find an explanation page there somewhere. Anyhow, rainfall is always mm. Good luck with the essay. I'm sure there's a way to reference data sources....
