Samsung Galaxy SII ROI Release?

    Hi Folks,

Just wondering if anyone here knows if the Samsung Galaxy SII is available from any of the mobile operators in Ireland or any idea when they might have them.

I was informed by someone in Meteor (around Mid January) that they had them in stock and would be shipping them to stores in the next few weeks so I put off getting the Samsung Galaxy. I have been in contact with Meteor but they have told me they do not have them and they will not be released anytime soon.

If I know they will be released fairly soon then I might hold off but if they are not going to be availbale for another six months then I'll just go ahead and get the S-I or possibly the Europa to tie me over. Any and all feedback welcome.

    Regards,

    Dave

Not really, it's not a query about the Android OS, Android bugs/fixes, 2.3 or release dates.

It's a query about the handset release, maybe should be in the
    Talkto->Eircom
Release date for the UK is May apparently

Well its an Android handset. It would be more beneficial to ask it in Android forum becase people would be more interested in it in Android Forum.

Theres even a big thread out there where discussion take place about the GS2

I don't think it is due for release until early April, so maybe May for an Irish network.

Sure it wasn't some other phone you were speaking with somebody in meteor about? The SGS2 wasn't even announced mid-January.

I'm reliably informed by a friend in O2 that they will have it instore from 1 June.

Cant decide whether to go for this or an HTC Desire?

Youd want to be nuts to go for a desire over the sgs2! A htc sensation maby, but not a desire theres no comparison between them!

It's on the Samsung Mobile Ireland facebook page that it will be available on Vodafone / o2 / Meteor / 3 / eMobile on June 1st so not too long to wait!

    Think this is three's pricing:
    Classic Flex €40pm - Handset 299 (18month) 149 (24month)
    Super Flex 60pm - 229 (18month) 99 (24month)
    Mega Flex 80pm - 142 (18month) 29 (24month)
    Ultimate Flex 95pm - 49 (18month) Free (24month)

Yeah, saw those. I hope Three aren't taking the lead for other networks to follow, €299 is a crazy price for a phone on an 18 month contract.

The SGS2 on Three for free, if thats the case, with a 40 yoyo contract for 15Gb of data and 350 flex points where 1 point = 1 minute of calls or 2 texts is an absolute steal imo. I don't like the cheap and nasty look and feel of the Samsung versus the Sensation, but at this price with this contract its a no brainer imo, as long as three's coverage is ok for you.

Was looking specifically at vodafone and it's free on any of the 300 minute plans or above for 18 months.Thats the usual with 1 GB of data.Confirmed today it's in Vodafone store. Will have it picked up first thing tomorrow.

Contract is for 2 years though! How long is contract with other networks or how much is contract for Sensation!

Vodafone were charging 119 for the Sensation on their 35 euro or 45 euro 18mth tariff or free on their 60 or 80 tariffs.

All of those tariffs have a 1Gb data limit which is what I have currently, which is sufficient for surfing the web and keeping up on social networks etc. BUT 15Gb opens up your phone as a truly viable mobile internet hotspot for streaming movies and/or music from your home PC or NAS to your ipad, or laptop anywhere in the country. They also allow you to roam like home in some major EU countries like the UK.

Ignoring the vast data disaparity, the comparable 18mth Vodafone contract would be the 45 yoyo 150+150 which would cost you 930 euro over the life of the contract (45*18 + 120 for phone) versus 960 over the 33% longer period of the Three contract. The downside is you have to wait 6mths longer for a new phone, but you always stand a chance of being able to break your contract "Under Regulation 17 of the European Communities (electronic communications networks and services)(Universal Service and Users’ rights) Regulations 2003 " if either operator changes the T&C's on you.

Its a bloody good deal imho, and one we rarely see on these shores for a bloody good phone, even if I favour the Sensation myself.

Any reason why you favour the Sensation? I think I will go with the S2 though anyway

Probably a silly question but if you are on a rolling 30 day contract and wish to port to another network, do you first have to cancel the rolling contract or is this taken care of in the porting process? Very tempted to switch from Meteor to Three. :)

I don't like the cheap, plasticky feel of the Galaxy S and S2, and I prefer the additional durability and heft of the Sensation and Desires Unibody aluminium casing. Samsung also use more proprietary stuff in their ROMs, eschewing the std android camera code for their own among other things which makes coding custom roms more of a pain in the bollox than on the HTC phones and tends to mean their Dev scene lags behind a bit. That said as of now there are no guarantees the Sensation will have its bootloader unlocked so on the Custom ROM front the SGS2 has the lead for now.

I am not due an upgrade / out of contract for a few more months, but if I was today I would be in a pickle as to which of these 2 fine phones to choose. But the value represented by this offering from Three would make my mind up for me, and indeed my workmate who was in this precise quandary will be in Three at the Pavillions tomorrow to make his purchase!

Yeah the offer is good indeed - I might also be joining your workmate in another three store!

Just off the phone with carphone warehouse, confirmed they will have them in the morning for €249 on their smart €35 plan. The contract is eighteen months.

Unfortunatley I couldnt convince him to hold one for me and he insisted its first come first served. I also spoke to Meteor and got my name on a list, the guy said he had over a 100 people calling about the phone today!

picked up an S2 yesterday - not cheap (same price as iPhone) but it is nice.

I have a question about why, in the included email client, my emails keep disappearing from my inbox. I'm a first time android user but not sure if this is the forum in which to ask such questions?

    Mod?
