car tax-a change in the law?

my friends dad goes away every year for a month at a time. If he is heading away just as his car tax is up, he doesn't pay for that month-when he comes back home he will get the tax form stamped by a guard to say it was off the road for that month...

A friend of mine mentioned that the law has recently changed and this is no longer possible, so if you own a car, you have to tax it all times, regardless if you may not be using it for a month or two..seems a bit crazy, anyone else know anything about this?

your friend is wrong, you can still declare the car off the road and tax it from afterwards.

i done my E46 last month.

i imagine a system will eventually come about where you have to declare your car off road in advance, but theres no change as yet.

A system similar to the UK where vehicles are declared off the road (SORN) in advance would be welcome - by me anyway. But to insist that all cars are taxed regardless of whether or not they're on the road/being used would never be fair on those who have summer cars etc.

No change to existing system, and unlikely to be, imo. The bean counters have bigger fish to fry.

I could see the system change very soon for example , 5 cent on petrol and get rid of road tax altogether , pay as you use the road i reckon is the only way forward

Surprising there isn't a similar facility for insurance...or is there?

You can suspend your insurance, I did it years ago when I was away with work.

The problem is that if your car is worth anything then it's not covered at all. I think some companies will allow you to keep Fire and Theft when you suspend, but you'd need to ask and it'll still cost some money

that wont happen. It would throw unacceptable extra costs on to high mileage drivers ie business users which would cause prices to rise.

They could get smaller cars. And before you say anything you could have some special deal or tax rebate for hauliers.

what about all the thousands of reps and salemen and utility van drivers? If you increase the costs for that lot, you increase prices all round.

No problem doing this. But he should make sure he waits for a full calendar month before making the declaration.

For example: If he goes away from 20th Mar to 20th Apr he can't go into the station on 28th April and declare he didn't use the car during April because April hasn't passed yet.
He needs to wait until 1st May at least before he makes the declaration and he won't be able to claim for March because he used the car sometime during March.

PS: telling porkies on the declaration could get him a conviction if anyone catches the car on the road at any time in April (so avoid speeding fines, checkpoints and traffic wardens).
