If you already paid your tax you can't be done for no tax.
You can be done thought, for not displaying tax disc - 60 euros penalty, no points.

My tax expired at the end of Feb, was stopped at a checkpoint and waved through last night, I haven't taxed it online yet.

Well a Garda is hardly going to put his life in danger by arguing with Jack Bauer over motor tax

may as well jump on this thread as its a similar query.

I'm after buying a car that has been laid up since December. So I need a form signed by the guards declaring it hasn't been used from Dec-Feb before I tax it. Do I need the vehicle registration cert as proof as its been sent away for change of ownership? Also anyone know how soon before I get the new one and again what proof would the guards need if I'm stopped in the meantime?

    Not Your Ornery Onager

OP: Your main worry would be an over-zealous traffic warden.

Dingatron: You are only liable for motor tax from the day you bought the car. Carry the receipt you got when you bought it in the meantime. As above, be wary of traffic wardens.

My car tax ran out end of March. I can afford to tax it today for 3 months, but I want to wait till next week when I can afford to tax it for 6 months.

Does anyone know exactly how much grace we get? I thought it was 10 days, but I'm not sure. :)

    Theres no grace period.

Whatever a Gard decides is purely his discretion.

You only have to pay the tax from the begining of the month that you became the new registered owner. The car not being taxed prior to you owning it is not your concern.

    What's the point?
You are barely saving any money paying for 6 months in comparision to paying for 3 months.
Better wait another while, and pay for 12 months. That will make you some saving.

Yes I agree, it's just that I don't want to fork out another sum of money in 3 months time. I'd rather put it off for 6 months. And 12 months is out of the question - it's too much to afford.

You have recently uses the services of the state (Gardai) and also feel compelled to write letters for our President yet you won't pay your fair share of taxes?

Buy 3 months tax, and invest somehow the rest of the money.
After 3 months pay tax for another 3 months, and you most likely will have more, than if you paid tax for the whole 6 months in the first place. It will be always a couple of bob for few pints ;)

I would never say no to a few pints, especially if they're G&T's :D

Normally the guards would let you off with a "Get it sorted ASAP" in regards to traffic wardens well they will do you if your an hour out of date usually no dicrection usually shown just trying to make money for the local council.
