Buy now or wait for a price drop?

So it's my birthday next week and my wife and family have kindly offered to buy me a ps3 if i want one. While i already have a 360 there are a fe platform exclusives which i quite fancy playing (uncharted 2, lbp etc).
My big worry is that i'll buy next week and then the price will drop the following week or something. This is especially true as consoles often decrease after xmas abd before easter.

So what's the best guess on a price drop? Should i buy now or hold out for one?

I've heard they are releasing a new version with a 300GB harddrive but its all speculation really, If they do, there will be a push to get rid of the old ones but unfortunately I've no facts for this, only rumours online :(

OP I reckon this is probably your best offer. 320GB with FIFA 11 for €329. Good offer imo.

I'd highly recommend adverts.ie. I got one there about 6 months ago for a lot cheaper than what I would have had to pay to get a brand new one. It was in perfect condition, had an second controller etc. Delighted with my purchase anyway.

    Thanks for the advice.
Might just bite the bullet. I saw one in HMV for 309 with 2 platinum games (think it was the 320gb one) but if not i reckon i could cope with 160gb

If it's 160gig don't pay that price for it... Try your local GAME they usually have some of the best offers.. Think my mate paid 350 or something with Fifa 11 and Playstation Move... Platinum games aint worth too much... But at 309 it all depends on the games to be honest?

Argos have a 320GB for €350 with two games. The choice of games are along the lines of:

    Saints Row 2/Infamous/Uncharted/Resistance 2 IIRC.

Also OP, just to let you know that you can easily upgrade your hard drive to a bigger capacity at any time and it's relatively easy. Plus the SATA hard drives are fairly cheap too online.

Tons of "how to" videos on YouTube.

Uncharted & Resistance are definitely worthy

You wouldn't even need 60GB..... unless you want to install a couple of 100 games at once and put on 1000s of songs.

I defo wouldn't be paying more for extra space.... I've yet to hit trouble with my 60GB

Well, i bit the bullet yesterday. Picked up a 320gb in HMV for 309.99 with a copy of killzone 3 thrown in. Not too bad for the price based on some of the offers i've seen around. also picked up the original LBP for 23 quid. Should keep me occupied for a while. Thanks for all the advive guys :)

Sony Announce 50% Price reduction on all PS3 consoles from Monday 7th March

Nah I'm kidding! Sorry OP. Couldnt resist :D

But it would be just the sort of thing to happen...... I wish.

Depends on the games you're buying really... 60GB of my 250GB drive is easily used up by game installs and demos... That's a moot point really though, 60GB models are a thing of the past these days...

i'm sure if people could buy 60gig ps3's right now they would for the ability to play ps2 games.

I'm in the same boat as the OP but I wouldn't be buying secondhand. On adverts there's no comeback. Buying something like this new in a shop you're covered by the Sale of Goods act which is solid.

I think I saw a new PS3 Slim for €250 in HMV the other day on Henry St. Then the one on Grafton St had it at the standard €300 price. I think I'll hold out a bit longer. Definitely don't want to be buying a 2nd hand machine though.

Thanks for that. Picked up resistance for a fiver in xtra visions and uncharted for a tenner. Should keep me going for a while and then i'll pick up the sequels!

Not saying you wouldn't use it up if you tried.
But in fairness how many of those games do you even play?.... I'd bet you haven't touched the majority in a long time.

I dont think the PS3 will ever drop below the €250 mark, well not until the PS4 is just around the corner! So I think your safe to buy now!

I revisit older games all the time, and if I did I wouldn't really fancy having to sit through a 20 minute installation again!
Like I said though, it's a moot point as it'll be damn hard to find a PS3 that only has 60GB of storage these days.

I have an 80Gb model which I would have said was more than enough space up to a couple of months ago - then I got play tv and hooked up to an aerial to get the Irish digital channels. The recordings take up quite a bit of space - about 1gb per hour I find.

I played the arse out of my 60GB PS3 for three and a half years before it weas struck down by the YLOD. I didn't come close to filling the hard-drive. My new PS3 is a 320GB one but I can't help feel like a mug for not going for the (cheaper) 160GB model.

HMV Henry St has em for €200

Power City has the PS3 w/ controller at €280 which I suppose is as low as it's getting (my previous posts were wrong as I mistakingly left out they were preowned consoles).

Has anyone ever gotten a few quid off a PS3 when buying with a TV? Even a tener off €280 would be great or if they'd throw in a free bluray movie.

I wasn't saying to get a 60GB, I was making the point that 60GB is hard to fill so the OP should avoid going for a 320GB and paying extra.

This post is what I was getting at...>>>

So is €280 from Powercity the cheapest to get a standard PS3 yeah?
