    Hi,
my 2006 A4 1.8t is in for a service. It has 51,000 kilometres on the clock so the timing belt isn't due for another 50k on milage. But the recomendation is change after 5 years if mileage isn't reached.

What do people think. If it inspects ok should I leave it for a year?

A belt can only really be inspected to see is it contaminated with oil or coolant and that it is not slack. Inspecting belts for anything else is a load of arse really, if it's half shredded or something there is obviously an issue though.

Thanks Guys. Yeah you are right about inspection. The Bosch certified garage are quoting me 495 on top of service to do it. Is that fair enough or run a mile?

You might want to give walsh motors in belfast a ring - they are 180stg for a 1.9 PD tb - im guessing a 1.8T would be similar. They have a pretty good rep on the vag sites and here

I had mine done (Timing Belt, water pump & tensioners) on my Golf Gti which has the same engine as your car and I paid £250 at P&R Motors in Newry (Main VW Dealers). VW Dealer here was looking for €495.

That's a good price seeing as half the front of the car has to be screwed off to get the job done

Well... it used to be that way with earlier A4's anyway

    Well lads. Thanks for responses.

I don't have time or inclination to drive up north for sake of hundred or two euro (when expense, petrol and hassle with childcare etc taken into account).

I rang around for a few quotes and seems to be typical price. As someone said its time taken to do it is the issue not parts.

And the garage is only 5 minutes away and will drop car back to work tommorrow. Ya can't put a price on that.

Indeed. And people have posted here before after problems with jobs done in the North. False economy when something goes wrong too, and indeed a lot of hassle...
