    Hi all,

I am looking to buy a good value diesel that would be doing 25K a year. My budget would be around the €13K mark. I have a Passat (1.9 TDI) with nearly 200K on it but a few things going wrong now with NCT up. Not a bad engine but have had a few electrical/ball joint problems so would be hoping to give something else a try this time around. I’m not looking for anything fancy, just A to B, efficient and reliable with maybe same engine size, 1.9, 2 Ltr with turbo. A 08 would be nice for tax reasons but won’t be the deciding factor. The resale value will not matter as I will be driving it until it’s worth nothing anyway.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated?
    Thanks all

If that car is genuine, at that price I would be jumping on it.... if I had the money of course!

Sorry I should have mentioned the mileage to be <60 thousand miles. A bit too high on that accord I'm afraid. An Irish car preferbly also. Tks.

I really wouldn't be too put off on the mileage on the accord. Obviously the usual diesel dmf and dpf problems apply but you're as likely to get those on a low mileage town driven car as much as a high mileage motorway cruiser.

Plus if you get a decent warranty, haggle a bit off that is an awful lot of ery good car for the money.

Same question I asked myself last year, I had a couple of Passats after moving from an old Nissan Primera petrol. Then went to Saab 93, loved the Saab, was great drive and was easy on juice on road driving but I lost an arm and leg on it because of the troubles with Saab etc been bought over. If that is fixed in long term will go back to Saab.

Had to change Saab last year and as I said I lost a bundle. test drove a number of different cars. The Avenis is very drab and an old mans car to be honest. I couldnt see myself driving it.

The A4 is great car, brother has had 2 and I have driven loads of them over the years as mates etc have all sorts of them from differnet years etc but in reality is just an expensive Passat which drives better but underneath is the same

In the end after much consideration I done something I never thought I would do, I purchased a Mondeo. Got the 1.8TDCI Zetec(cruise control etc included) and love it. Nice to drive but slow in 1st gear. Smooth on roads but can be jumpy in cornors.

It is also very big, I didnt go with hatch back model, benefit is I could fit 2 very big Italians after a hit in the booth to dump:eek:

It is great on diesel, a fill the other day cost around 82 euro. I got 1,100KM from the tank before I had to refill. Now that was driving on motorway down to Cork/Galway etc from Dublin.

I do a lot of milage so that was a big part of the decision and the mondeo ticked all the boxes. Won't tell you price but should be around the price you are looking at and you should be able to get a 08, I went with 07 and regret it with tax prices on it.

I was Passat and would still be Saab only for issues but I find the Mondeo is a lot better than Passat

Would look at the hatch back model and not the full size, it is huge to be honest but I love big cars so I like it. Not for everyone, as you can see from other thread the wife doesn't like it cause it big.

Give it serious consideration and also good trade in value. Not sure if I said but I have 07, will prob swap up to 08/09 this year for tax only. Will get same model with extra's.

I did sit in base model and my back hurt straight away. Seats where awful

Edit, have you driven the old base Passat versus the Comfortline, same thing on seats, first Passat I had was base model, I remember driving to Kerry in it years ago when no motorways. It killed my ass! haha!
