and also, am i mad to buy a 1.8 now as it could be near impossible to sell in a year or 2?

I'm just back from a 25k trip in my 1.8 and my trip computer told me I had an average fuel consumption of 12.3l per 100km!! I don't want to convert it to MPG because I know its not gonna be pretty ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,069 ✭✭✭✭CiniO

    It can't be litres / 100 miles.
    Most likely litres/100km.
Or MPG but it would be really bad ;)

As far as I know it is the same engine as was in the '02 Mondeo Zetex 1.8 petrol
    if so
I had one and it guzzled juice around town.
€20 for 70Kms was nothing out of the ordinary :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,012 ✭✭✭route66

To convert L/100kms to MPG, use the formula: 282.5/LITRES per 100 KMS.

    So 13.5 litres/100 kms = 282.5/13.5 = 20.93 MPG

Or, to make it easier, go here and let the website do the work for you ;)

I will enquire form him how his one is on fuel ;)

I've never heard of litres / 100 miles. If it's true, then the formula for converting to MPG is:
    454.91/LITRES per 100 Miles = 454.91/13.5 = 33.7 MPG

I'm surprised that somebody would come up with a measure that mixes imperial and metric  Maybe you were giving it some welli and 20.93 is the accurate figure for urban driving.

Not too unrealistic for a petrol engine if it was a short run in urban conditions, eh, kid :)

I don't know where your "town" is, but expecting 33mph in any family size petrol engined saloon car is unrealistic in the Dublin area

This "litres / 100 miles" measurement has to be wrong?:confused:

    It makes absolutely no sense!

Only from 2004 onwards Ford started using the Mazda block. Before that it was Ford's own unit, which was a piece of crap really.
And for the record, the Mazda trip computer is in litres per 100 kilometres, not miles! Even if the clock is in miles.

no it really is litres/100miles! ive read it on a few forums tonight. you can get a mazda dealer to change it if you wish. http://forum.mazda6club.com/europe/133438-trip-computer.html

You could always try a more subjective measure:
I was down in the mudders on Wednesday. She asked me to go and collect de washing from de sisters. I did dat and stopped off for chips in Pa's on de way home after calling into Charlie to talk to him about the sediment in the well. Drove to work the next day and I called back to Charlie in the evening (he wasn't well). I put a tenner in on my way back from work the next day and it brought up between a quarter and a half - dat's pretty good I'd say.
   ;)

I had a 2004 Mazda, UK import, it was litres per 100kms. Mate has a 02 one, his is litres per 100kms. Neither had been changed from factory.

    +1

I had a 1.8 petrol Avensis which is similar in same size/weight to the 6. Did well to get 29/30mpg around town. Even a diesel will do poor mpg around town, too much start/stop driving to be fuel efficent.

BTW I'd doubt that the trip computer would display litres per mile. That is mixing the old imperial system with the new metric system. It is either km per litre or miles per gallon.

Ok, fair enough; it's a story and not a measurement but based on what others are saying above, it appears to be about as accurate a measurement of fuel consumption as the 33.7 MPG ;)

BTW, has anyone else heard MPG being expressed as a story rather than a number ?

im not putting down your suggestion of mpg by story ( i am ), but i havent actually seen any mazda 6 forums that say its l/kms?

As per above, some 6s report in L/100kms, some in L/100miles. Even if your mileage is small, there is a huge difference between 20 and 33 MPG; your pocket will feel it. Check it out the old-fashioned way before you break out the reddies!

i am never in traffic much and although most of my trips until the summer will be short, they are usually pretty free flowing. i was going to get a 140 bhp celica until insurance fecked it up sure. surely a mazda 6 cant get 20mpg round town....can it? my 04 astra g is going to be sold this weekend for 3500 and ive a 05 mazda lined up for 3900. my main concern is selling it on again in a year or two?

Around/about the town, odd trip to relatives etc
    previous = Scenic 1.4l = 8.2L/1000
    now = Avensis 1.6l = 8.3L/1000

quite happy with the current 34mpg considering...

dont think the 1.8 would do that though

I know someone who went from a 1.4 Mazda 3 to a 1.8 Mazda 6. They've been complaining about the poor fuel economy since. Over 30 mpg is wishful thinking about town. Tbh, you'd be doing well to crack it in the first place.

    1.7 Puma.
    The Celica.
    Leon FR.

You could buy some of those below budget leaving enough for insurance. Can't see there being a huge difference in economy either.

hey, its my money and it doesnt seem to be financially viable atm. apologies to all. there is a lot of mazda 6's put up for sale recently and none are selling so it only makes sense. gonna keep it for another year or so and see how the petrol and stuff is then.

I'm only kidding ya! The Astra you posted in another thread looks pretty tidy tbh. If it's running well id keep it and save for the insurance on something you really want. Could see you getting tired of the 6 pretty quickly...

Yea, forgot about that - I'd say this was a classic compromise to allow a standard to be put in place: You can have the wheel diameter in inches if you give us the width in metric ;)
