Somebody on here said when you join a club basically you submit three cards over the same course and basically the handicap secretary goes through your scores taking all the scores but if you get a more than a double bogey on a hole it is limited to that, then adjust your scorecards to suit that and see how far over par you are..........

    Not sure if this helps

As there are likely to be a number of triple bogeys there that would be lowered to doubles, I'd guess you'd likely to be placed in and around the 18-20 handicap but it might take a while to play to that in competition.

    18... ish.

It's a simple enough process when you look to get awarded a handicap.
Play 3 rounds at your new club with an existing member who marks your card.
Any big score on a hole is reduced down to a double bogey.
The best of your adjusted scores is then taken and the SSS (not par) for the course is subtracted from that score (which is why you mark on the card the tees you played from).
The remainder is your handicap (sort of).

Now, other things come in to play that can influence this automatic handicap such as a decent run of holes that shows there's a golfer in there somewhere... so in some cases you won't be awarded this calculated handicap but you'll get something close to it. It is also assumed that you will improve (and quite quickly since you are a beginner) so a conservative handicap award is best.
