Intrastat question

I do the books for a small retail outlet and have we have always managed to stay under the radar for Intrastat returns. Unfortunately our imports for 2010 exceed the €191k. Just a couple of questions that someone might be able to answer ; Is there an enormous amount of work involved. Is there a piece of software that can do most of the work. We use an old tailormade accounts system (very outdated). If we switched over to Sage or Thesaurus or suchlike, would that make Intrastat easier ?

The intrastat returns are fairly easy to complete, just a little time consuming. Before your purchase a piece of software I would try using the Revenue ROS facility as it is free. You simply need to input all the relevant details from the invoice. The ROS format is fairly easy to follow.

    Thanks for replying Farrentax,
I downloaded the ROS facility and had a quick look at it. You have to enter EVERY invoice ! You can't just put a total for monthly foreign purchases in?
If any invoice has mixed goods, eg some clothes/books/dvds, do you have to enter in the individual goods. Sorry for the questions but I need to know how much work is involved before I commit myself to doing them.
    Thanks

    Hi,

Unfortunately you do have to enter each inidividual invoice, but this is a requirement regardless of what software you use. With regard to mixed goods they will have to be entered separetly if they are different types of goods. This is due to the fact that you have to inculde an 8 digit commodity code for each item on th return. There is assistance available via ROS to help you determine which commodity code to use.
