Hello ,I recently dug up an old copy of microsoft picture it and tried to install it on a vista machine and discovered it doesn't work.
I found a link that outlines what to do to get the program working in Vista ,but no matter what I done ,it just wouldn't work:(. It's basically an MDAC problem

Has anyone ever come across this problem before and sorted it out?

Heres the link I was following to sort out the problem.
    LINK.

you will probably want GIMP: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIMP

Interface is... different. But mighty powerful and mighty free.

It has both , and I really like the auto level Ctrl+Shift+L
so newbies can tidy up photos without too much messing around

    http://www.getpaint.net/features.html
    http://eecs.wsu.edu/paint.net/doc/2.6/Help/en/Tools.html

as the .net in it's name suggests you do need Microsoft's .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, installed , other than that it just a 3.5MB download

I haven't had a chance to look at anything yet . One thing that picture it has is objects that can be added into edited images and various shading etc ,basically a publishing software.
Would I get these options in the recommendations ?

I've never used Picture It, but as far as I can tell from Wikipedia whatever version you're using is going to be at least 6 years old. If you can't get it working, you should have a look at Paint.Net, GIMP, GimpShop (a modified version of GIMP with a more Photoshop-like menu structure and interface) or ArtWeaver. These are all available as freeware and are pretty good image editors - Paint.NET in particular has a pretty active community who have developed a lot of additional features that you can install as filters.

I've used Gimp/Gimpshop and Paint.NET both as free alternatives to Photoshop and haven't run into many issues - I doubt that anyone at the home user/amateur photographer end of the usage spectrum would find them particularly lacking, though as with all image editing suites it may take a while to get the hang of how everything works.

Thanks for all the replies ,starting to like paint.net.
It's not what I was looking for in Picture it ,but it's easy enough to use and free:)

    Cheers.
