Do Traffic Wardens check tax & insurance?

Since starting in college, I've been parking in an estate just beside it. One side of the road has double yellow lines and the other side doesn't allowing people to park without a parking disc or fear of being clamped . In the last day or two while returning to my car I noticed the Traffic Warden checking car's certificates. Somebody mentioned this is true.

Initially I was surprised but I guess it's common sense to expect them to take note of cars without tax + insurance while walking past.

Definetely they check the tax and slap on a penalty for non display. Not sure about insurance.

yes! i got a fine parked in a public car park in Kilkenny last year cos my motor tax was out... Prick fined me for 50% of the cost of re-taxing it..

I would have broken his legs if i saw him, cos the only reason i fell behind was because i was stone broke due to personal reasons, so the fine made it even harder to get the money up to re-tax it..

No recession in their minds!!

True, if you can afford to pay to run it legally. Dont use it!

Why should I and others pay tax and insurance, if you dont!

I would have been totally oblivious If I didn't notice it. They seem to go around at least once everyday checking every car. Nothing is out of date yet, but at least I'll make sure to park in the college if I can't get it taxed in time! Going to be even harder if it's increased by FG.

Two cars behind mine today, one had an envelope placed on the windscreen, I knew it was parked correctly like mine and I assumed something needs renewing.

    Cheers for the replies:)

Might be a better idea to take the bus/bike if there is no tax on it. The guardians of the peace are well known to seize untaxed vehicles as well as giving you a free day off college to attend court!

In fairness how was he to know that that you were stone broke due to personal reasons? Should those who can't afford road tax be given a dispensation?

You would have broke his legs for doing his/her job ? I wonder about the mentality of people these days. I've a 3ltr car off the road at the moment as I can't afford to tax it.

What do you expect the motor tax law to be "In times of recession just pay whenever you feel like it, or if you don't want to there's no panic either" ?

I feel there is something badly amiss when the cost of taxing larger engined veichles for a year is quite often well in excess of the value of the vehicle. Just like yourself there are many with their larger engined cars parked up taking up space and going rusty. Don't particularly want to open a can of worms though and drag the thread off topic and as the matter has being discussed to the nth degree here before. You are very right to highlight peoples mentality and as ever ignorance of the law is not an excuse...

Clampers always check the tax disc to see it doesn't have Exempt on it in which case they ignore the illegally parked vehicle, I assume traffic wardens do the same.

Thats it exactly , due to the amount of motor tax due on the higher engined vehicles they suffer massive depreciation. I don't like paying the motor tax any more than the next guy but I don't go driving it with the intention of breaking legs if I get caught without it.

If the car is out of tax and someone with the relevant authority spots it I think you have to expect a reaction. You put yourself in that situation by driving it, recession or no recession.

Our group have found the solution for the notice for untaxxed fine is write on letter no contract return to sender and post it back to sender eg the tax office

Logic is simple its not breaking the law to not have car tax it only breaking a statute which is really a government pontification that is meant for commercail companies and not for us humans

We hang in the group www.tnsradio.ning.com and non of pay TV licence as we know how the real laws work so much so now you dont see the adds on tv telling you how big the fine is anymore as we won too many cases and now they just try to scare people to pay the TV licence :pac: with silly stories as they know they CANT FINE YOU IF YOU KNOW THE RIGHT THINGS TO SAY

Soon we expect the same to happen to Road tax as we win more battl;es

Alsom we dont pay the M50 tolls or other tolls and we still get to use the toll roads

jaysis.. there are some "holier that thou" people on here, it must be great to not have financial issues.. for one thing its not "sponging" when you have to pay the back tax anyway, it just wasnt convenient to pay for tax at that particular time because as some people may have noticed we are not in the best of financial status at the minute.. so that sponging comment is about as useful as tits on a bull.. secondly i have paid motor tax for over 15 years continuously without fail, so the sting was a bit of a pain in the hole when i was only out by a month waiting for payday.. and yes this "sponger" does work and has done so for over 17 years, hence the need for driving when the car was out of tax because i still have to earn the bread regardless of a piece of over priced paper in the window..

    cheers big ears!

What part of 'If your car's not taxed then you can't drive it' aren't you getting? Nobody cares why you can't tax it, that's your business. Take responsibility for your own financial affairs and stop trying to blame the warden for your tax-dodging.

I hope you never have to suffer hardship man.. what part of "i need to work regardless of a piece of paper in the windscreen" do you not get..?

Macker, was there any public transport available to you at the time? How long was the tax out?

    Hear hear,

The same goes for the scroungers that want a free ride on their property debts that they were forced to get into by their parents/friends/associates/enemies etc.

I do have sympathy with the OP as the I have been in the dodgy position myself a time or two.

Meh, I photoshopped mine for years & got away with it.

    Dramatization, may not have happened.

Terrible behaviour, if you get caught forging such documents I believe it's a criminal offence.

Good thing I gave it up so..... ha ha .... only joking

so you're committing tax evasion by not paying the motor tax and then lying to the revenue when you write back to them on the letters?

Good man, outstanding citizen you are :mad:

I drove on a public road last night without a valid tax disc and the Garda at the checkpoint didn't have an issue with it. Now if I was doing powerslides around corners I reckon he might have been irked somewhat.

I'd love to see some sources or court reports showing where cases for non-payment of tv licence or motor tax or M50 tolls have been "won" by your group.

    I have a feeling I'll be waiting

My tax was due for renewal at the end of February. Money's tight though. So I tightened the belt for the past two months to ensure that I had enough to pay my tax. Simple.

How far out of date was it? February? He'd let you off. January? No he wouldn't.

BTW Traffic Wardens the only discs they check/report on are parking and motor tax. Insurance and NCT outside their scope.

That was in response to a comment saying that you cannot drive on a public road without a VALID tax disc :) Mine expired end of Feb :)

exactly, you have a minimum of three months notice, up to a year, of when you are due to pay you tax so its fairly simple to plan for it even if it is a bit more difficult to afford it. Its not like it jumps out of the blue one day unexpectedly.

I think the Garda didn't have an issue with your expired tax disc because your allowed to drive on a tax disc that is expired less than one month. Had your tax expired at the end of Jan it would have been a different matter.

There is no forum Nazi to dictate what is to be discussed so all extremes can be debated and probably eventually meet in the middle and are then balanced out :D

There are many discussion on many topics from growing your own food and to stuff that is motor car related and how not to pay fines and how to run on bio fuels and save costs
