Media reporting that Serena had a pulmonary embolism (clot on the lungs) last week and underwent surgery. Apparently she has been in and out of hospital having check-ups and the like.
A few sources are reporting it here, here and here

Awful situation for Serena. She was supposed to play at the Miami Masters but it's probably in doubt now. Would be terrible to see her miss more tournaments.

Fox Sports have a piece that throws doubt on a Serena comeback and the possibility of her earlier than expected retirement.

Sad news if she has to retire due to health reasons; I doubt she wants to bow out like this, especially since she's been out of action since July. It's probably likely that Venus will retire soon too (maybe after 2012 Olympics?).

Tennis without the Williams Sisters would be a lesser place imho.

I reckon she'll be back if she gets better. No doubt she's still hungry for more. Whether it'll last or not is another thing. Depends on how serious the condition becomes I guess.

She's hoping to be back in time for the summer hardcourt season. It will be interesting to see how she is feeling and playing when that time comes.

I'm sure she's be devastated about missing Wimbledon and defending her title....but her health is more important!
