Businesses / Practices that take Accountancy Trainees in the South East

    Hi Everyone,

I am desperately looking for a training contract in the South East, I am based in Carlow but will go anywhere within reasonable distance. I am IATI qualified (exams complete but not work experience) and have completed all CAP1s (ACA) however I have no accountancy experience as I have worked in sales for the past few years. There is a list of practices that take trainees on the Chartered Accountants Ireland website but I am wondering where else I can look?

Are there recruitment agencies that specialize in this area or any large companies that also take on trainees that you know of?

Would you recommend sending my CV to every practice even if they are not looking for anyone at present?

Thank you very much for any help in advance!

There are plenty of recruitment agencies that look after accountants. Hays and Premier (renamed since I used them last) in particular. Call in to see them. Give it a personal touch and when they know you, they can pitch you to any firms that are recruiting. Best of luck.

Get on the phone to lots of practices, ask them when they expect to be recruiting trainees, get the name of the person that deals with recruitment and fire in a CV.

You can also see if you could get work experience in a practice, particularly a larger one (meaning say 20-30 staff). If you impress, you'll improve your chances when they look to hire a trainee.

Accountancy practices hire trainee accountants, even in a recession, you just need your CV to be in the right place at the right time.

You could also start to do some freelance bookkeeping, this will give you some experience and look good on a CV.

    Hi skybox & djk1000!

Thank you very much for your helpful replies, I will make sure my CV is fully up to date and then arrange an appointment with the agencies - if nothing comes up I will start the ring around you suggest djk1000! I am still in full time work at the moment (with a mortgage!) so work experience or book keeping isn't really an option however I will re-consider this at a later stage if necessary. I am desperate to get off current career path and onto accountancy one but can't really afford to live without at least a trainee wage coming in. Trying to be sensible!

Does anyone know of any companies in the southeast that take on trainees? (as opposed to practices)

Thank you very much again for your help!
