Hello,l have a SAAB 93 diesel 2005 - 150bhp model. The car has a noisy rattling sound when the engine is just started and when idling. Does anybody know the source of the problem here?

Sound like your Dual Mss Flywheel is on the way out. Expensive fix. Budget €1000 if not more. Does it ease when the clutch is pressed?

The test for the DMF prob is to check for rattling right at the biting point of the clutch. The budget is indeed €1k so hopefully its something else

Is noise apparant on warm start?

Cold start and idle noise is often the sound of tappets, due to poor oil circulation. When was oil and filter last changed? Does engine have belt or chain?

Not sure if that model has a timing chain and even then it's too soon for it to go.

The timing belt was replaced only 6 months ago. I cannot hear the noise when Im driving, maybe its there when driving too. The car has 210,000 klms on the clock, is it normal for the DMF to go at this point?

210000 klms is about right for a DMF relacement although they can go much earlier than that.

Well do the clutch test, if its not that you'll have to have a good check around the engine bay (preferably with somone at the wheel to raise and lower the revs) esp the exhaust manifold/belt pulley idlers and see if any looseness can be isoloated.

If the car is on the original DMF, then count yourself lucky that you've got this far - they normally fail a lot earlier than 130,000 miles (more like between 60k and 100k).
