I was looking at one of these a while back and the general picture was reliable and cheap, but very heavy on petrol.

Bought a 2001 executive version of this recently and can say they're a fine car, if its got a decent service history and NCT I'd say go for it. They're a great car to drive and great reliability record.
No heavier on juice than my previous car, a 1.6 mondeo.

Brother has a 2000 2.0 ltr vtec accord. A very nice car & utterly reliable but a thirsty enough yoke as well. Expect about 30mpg combined. Ive considered an accord as my next car but im put off by his comments about how heavy on petrol it is in around the city.

Then again it is a 2 litre vtec engine. The newer gen accord (03 on) has a much more reasonable 38 mpg economy. The car itself is a fair bit more expensive to buy as well though.

    What about a 1.8 mazda 6?

These are reliable cars. They have a timing belt rather than the chain used in the 7th Gen (2003-2008). I'd guess a 2000 Accord would be as cheap as chips to buy (which is good), but a timing belt replacement might cost as much as the car (which is not).

Also, the newer model 2.0 litre will do somewhere between 25 and 35 MPG - short urban journeys and fast motorway driving respectively. You might get 40MPG if you drive like a granny. I've no idea how this would compare with the older 6th gen. Don't rely on the official fuel consumption figures !

I'd look out for the accord 1.8 VTEC would be a lot better on petrol than the 2.0 think 32 - 35mpg, the 2.0 would be closer to 20 - 25mpg, the 1.8 would be a bit cheaper to tax also. I'd put an Accord slightly ahead of a mazda 6 its a better car to drive, very similar setup but the accord is rev happy.
