Workers no showing up!!

This morning 2 different sets of workers were to show up.
2 plumbers to replace a shower & another guy to cut own a tree in the garden.
Both appts were confirmed this week.
I deliberately made the appts on the same morning so as I would only have to stay in one day- and guess what -there's no sign of either of them and no call to say they're delayed.

These guys are local and work for themselves. Aren't these the type of people who are complaining that there is so little work these days.
And when they do the job, they'll want cash and won't want to give you a receipt.
    What can I do?

have you tried calling them this morning?

If they're a no-show then you ring them to tell them not to bother turning up and you find someone else.

No excuse for simply not turning up in this economy.

Thats lazy, tell them not to bother turning up. Get someone else in.

Could be something genuine but there's no excuse for them not calling

More likely they dropped you for a bigger job. They like putting on the poor mouth and times are so hard....

Drop them and get somebody else who wants your business

If they show up in the next hour tell them to get lost.

You have my sympathy, I honestly believe that there may be 3-4 plumbers in the country with an effective work ethic. What is it with plumbers in this country?

My advice is to ask around for recommendations, be prepared to pay for reliability.

The good plumbers and the best tradesmen still get business. And rightly so.

Your lads are probably still in bed with their Celtic Tiger mentality and it's not worth their while to get out of bed for less then €200 a day. Or some other nonsense, I remember being told that by a tradesmen a few years back.

I'm lucky enough to know friends/family in the various trades.
Even these days as evident by the OP there are a lot of clowns still out there.

It's frustrating! No word from them.

Trying to support local workers and this is how I get treated.

They obviously don't need your money as bad as some.

Definitely hire someone else and cancel with these guys. There's tradesmen out there begging for work!

I wouldn't even bother cancelling tham. Get someone else and if they show up at the door tell them to get lost. If they haven't the respect and decency to let you know what's happening why should you afford them some?!

Par for the course I am afraid. It'd make you want to try your hand at things yourself even when you're not sure what you are doing!

Report them for attempted tax dodging?

Ring their phones, leave a message saying not to bother, you'll get someone else.
I've been on site the last few years, and had a lot of dealings with tradesmen.
Suffice to say that if I make an appointment for a tradesman at my home, and they don't show, that's it.They don't get a second chance. There's plenty of them out there, and I don't care how good or how cheap they are - if I can't rely on them, they're no good to me.I've worked with plenty of lads over the last few years who are fantastic, and that's the level I expect.Anything less is not acceptable.
My parents have a guy whose work they think is brilliant, and they like him to do every job but he's totally unreliable. Never shows up when he's supposed to, not even to look at things, let alone do the work, and rarely answers the phone. It infuriates me....if it was me, I just wouldn't tolerate that. He wouldn't be getting any further jobs from me.And there's no reason why you should have to put up with it either.

If they can't even be bothered to call and let you know then feck 'em. It's bad enough them not showing up, but to not even let you know is bad form. Even if something urgent came up I'd at least give a quick call to apologise and reschedule. If they can't show you enough respect to do that then get someone else.

    PS: Appropriate username! :D

The trades, such as plasterers, plumbers etc are a law onto themselves.

In my former line of work you had to do an RTC diploma, now ordinary degree and the level of expertise required was far higher than most trades. Because the trades can restrict the number of trainees and hence the supply they think they can lord it over customers and treat everyone else like trash. In contrast there is a vast oversupply of RTC/Institute of Technology Graduates who cannot get work and are treated like serfs when they do.

Once we had to call out a plumber for a simple shower sealing job, cost us over €100 for 15 mins work!!!!

The same Week a house visit from DUBDOCs cost us €65........for doctor and a separate driver to take her to the house........

The government need to supply places for enough plumbers so that there is more willing people trained to supply a decent reliable service and break the existing near monopoly that exists in these trades.
