Recently got a new tail lamp for the OH car, it was a spurious one. The original was Hella but the spurious one was 100% identical bar the Hella markings. Every mould line, mark and detail was exactly the same. It must have been the same company making both. I thought Hella made their own stuff but maybe they outsource like everyone else.

I've heard that the factories making Volvo parts in Asia also make the spurious parts and just don't put the brand name on them.

That is very often the case.

With a lot of OEM parts, for triple the retail price you do get some very nice branded packaging :D

Reminds me of the tale from yesteryear, bloke cracks a tail light in his Jag, gets quoted an outrageous price at the dealers. Then the dealer says he has the idential part in a Morris Minor box for 1/10th the price..

    Doesnt have to be yesteryear.

Volvo S40 alternators versus Ford alternator same part number on both--150-200 saving.

Rear suspension arms s40--200+ Ford--again same part number 75 each.

Clutch slave cylinder--Volvo 119.Ford same part number 220.

Just a few off the top of the head but Ive come across loads since we changed to Ford/Volvo.

You do need the part number off the part if its a Volvo but its worth it if you do have a volvo and see a ford part number on the part youre looking for.Huge savings to be made.

I've used tons of spurious parts and they were perfect. I put new spurious headlights on my friends e36 318 and they were bang on! Somtimes panels can have minor imperfections but u can compromise easily so they look 100%.

Used various spurious 02 lambda sensors which never gave hassle. It makes great sense on an older car to avoid massive costs.

    Agree 100%

Volvo lambda sensors are 260-290+ vat.

Spurious ones that you cut and join the wires yourself are between 30-50.

    No brainer really.

Are you thinking of Genuine parts vs OEM vs spurious.

Genuine = Car manufacturer's name and price on the box. Made by supplier to car manufacturer's specs and quality.

OEM = Made by the original manufacturer and specs of the Genuine part under licence from the car manufacturer, but without the car manufacturer's name and price on the box. Identical spec and quality of the Genuine part.

Spurious = made God know's where. May be identical in spec and quality but not assured as the spurious manufacturer doesn't have access to the original design specs, but are often a good match.

I love OEM, I have all their albums, my favourite would have to be "The best of OEM"

Makes sense.Personally Ive used "made god knows where" in the past but the rule I go by--Something important/safety related--oem or genuine, anything else "made god knows where"
The exception being brake pads--always mintex or apec mainly because I find that theyre as good if not better than the genuine or oem.

Theres a crowd after opening up in the last few months selling "genuine x parts" that they source from Turkey.Theyre selling this stuff as "genuine"(they even have the manufacturers branding all over the building,on their jackets,on their headed paper) yet most of the stuff is knock offs and/or counterfeit in genuine brand boxes.Ive also heard that a lot of this stuff is packing up with no warning--slave cylinders breaking up inside the gearbox, hubs collapsing etc.

So be careful out there--make sure the stuff is reputable. This stuff is being advertised on gumtree so says it all really.

I've had spurious arms go within 5k on an alfa 156, OEM / Genuine last 50k. Depends on the manufacturer.

In the Uk Watchdog caught GSF selling all manner of counterfeit parts a few years ago. Like most things these days you never know where the stuff comes from.
