My car was parked legally in sligo, during rag week a group of students picked it up and moved it into the middle of the road causing an obstruction, the car was towed. I was unaware of this and went to report the car stolen.

They told me it was towed and i had to pay 125 euro release fee even though i had done nothing wrong. Is this correct?

if your car had been stolen and ditched in the middle of the road it still would have been towed. wouldn't it?

not sure about the 125 euros though but it does sound like that could be right too as it is the impound fee not a fine.

    Not an expert though.

Probably nothing you can really do about that tbh.
I'd still report it to the Gardaí - exactly what you say happened. They may believe you and look into it, but I'm sure the odd drunk that has parked their car somewhere strange has used the "stolen" excuse before.
Obviously I'm in no way implying that this is your case, but you know what I mean. :)

It is an offence to obstruct a road so that is why you have to pay. If, as you say, the car was moved without you consent you can make a statement about this. It may be an offence under Section 112 of the Road Traffic Act and the people who moved it could possibly be prosecuted.

surely it was an offence that they moved my car?? if my car was stolen and then parked illegally would i have to pay the parking fine?

Like I said, make a statement to say they stole your car. You better be prepared to follow through with their prosecution and give evidence in court though. That's assuming the dpp goes ahead with the charges against them. Exactly how far did they carry your car?
