Would this be a better option then this D-Link if both devices were configured with the same storage(2TB)?

That D-Link DNS-323 is fairly old, it'd be using a slow processor and relatively low amounts of ram. The WD Mybook Live is brand new and very fast, it would be likely several times faster.

Now whether you actually see that speed depends on what kind of a network you are running.

Obviously there is a big difference between a sealed single-drive unit and a two-bay NAS in terms of configuration, expansion, replacing drives etc. But even if you were going for a two-bay NAS, I wouldn't buy that D-Link, it is too old. Get a newer model.

I Presume you also need to purchase the SATA hard drives for the D-Link also which adds extra costs

One question - would anyone know if this is possible on the WD or do I need to have this running on a PC http://lifehacker.com/#!5772418/how-to-turn-your-computer-into-an-internet-personal-video-recorder

Am a little confused as I am trying to set up the best possible streaming possible at home to watch TV shows and movies around the house. I have a 1TB Iomega Screenplay Pro which is networked but its full so I need more space

Was thinking of getting this http://www.ebuyer.com/product/225756 which is a bargain in itself – this could be the streaming hub or server for me with the added attraction that it can be used as a full blown PC too

Then thought I should just get this http://www.harveynorman.ie/seagate-3-5-expansion-2tb-hard-drive-2.html (another great bargain) to add extra storage to the Iomega and use some media players around the house to play stuff

Then I came across the WD and again thats a great bargain

Wow am I confused and its all down to Bargain Alerts – buying stuff I could probably do without but they are a bargain so ‘why not’

iBOOD good deal today - Western Digital My Book ® Live ™ - 2 TB NAS Server with Gigabit Ethernet for €129 + delivery
    http://www.ibood.com/ie/en/product_specs/4768/Western_Digital_My_Book__Live__-_2_TB_NAS_Server_with_Gigabit_Ethernet_/

Looks pretty good and has DLNA built in which is handy.

Just got it. 142 euro including deliv. Not a bad deal. Just read about a member who has a failed drive on the Dlink dual bay after a few weeks thats been touted around BA recently. That sealed it for me....

was just reading the cnet review of the OP device, it doesn't have usb and the hard drive is not accessible so backing up its data is not an easy option. that rules it out for me.

    Sorry n00b question...
Would it mean that if I am connected via wired LAN then lack of USB and drive access is not really that important as it can be backed up via the network

there's a newer version of that d-link available for about £130 on amazon (with a 2tb drive added) I'd rather deal with amazon than ibood should any issues occur! And room for expansion/backup in future

    ^^ Yup.

Just seen the above post ( typical  ) but I'm a fan of WD and 2TB will definitely be enough for my needs ( he says worryingly....... )

PC World Carrickmines are selling a similar WD product just shy of €130.

    Apologies for poor pic.

No debating needed. Your BA for a 2TB NAS; and you bought a PC :p

And she will kill you as this place is bloody addictive.

Ya apologies for misleading the thread a bit but after much research on NAS and Media Players and Nettops I really just needed to decide what was best for my needs and in the process today I found these nice little bargains I think.

Just spotted that ASUS on Komplette for €430 so that makes the purchase even a better bargain

How can what you bought act as a replacement for a NAS when it only has a 250GB hard drive?

Its got 6xUSB (incl 2xUSB3.0) and an eSATA port. It wouldn't replace a multi-bay server but certainly media streaming isn't going to be a problem.

So you're saying (sorry I need things spelled out to me!) he fills up an external hard drive full of assorted media and then hooks it up to one of the USB/eSata ports?

Once its on the network then you can share any connected storage, same as with any PC. By default windows gives you decent SMB and UPNP sharing, but you could use other options if you want.

    Yup thats the plan
I already have 2 x 1TB drives almost full and I plan to purchase another 2TB drive and just plug it in to the USB on the Nettop
Added bonus I believe is that it will act as a type of NAS, a Media streaming hub and also as a basic PC for surfing the net emailing etc if needed
