The 1st preference 3 seater constituency Dáil

    So 43 constituencies and voting purely on one single vote per person on the ballot paper with each constituency being a three seater. 129 seat Dáil. 65 needed for overall majority.

    Lab 27
    SF 15
    FF 14
    Ind 11
    ULA 4

    Still the same negotiations would happen although the slight difference would be Sinn Féin becoming the biggest opposition party.

    If you used the first past the post system on the 43 constituencies in the hypothetical mini-Dáil Fine Gael would be able to rule alone.

    All hypothetical here of course :)

    At least we'd have 37 less TD's (with their salary and expense accounts to pay for).

    And the country would be none the worse off for that.

    Neither model would be particularly accurate as (a) one needs to take constituency population into account (b) in any change to a FPTP election, people would change their voting style, e.g. more people would vote for more popular candidates, as they would be the only onces with a hope of being elected.
