Now, no promises lads, but I'm going to make enquiries into this. I reckon it'll probably be a CZ 452 American (They make it left-handed). Not certain but it'll probably be in .17 HMR as I'm not bothered by the slight extra cost and I've quite a lot of use for something for whacking corvids out to about 150 or so, sheep farmers look to be having a bad time of it on my permissions, and it's slightly better for any fox I saw than a .22LR as well by the sound of things. So, just a couple of questions.

    1. Is there any good reason to get the .22LR over the .17HMR other than cost?
    2. What should I scope it with? Don't need huge magnification, want to keep it nice and light and handy.
    3. What's a good mod? I'll probably cut it back to 20" so a mod should balance it nicely.
    4. Who does the best prices on CZs, and who offers what in terms of packages?

Had a nice evening out there yesterday wishing I had something like this to whack a few very tasty looking bunnies (Decided not to unleash the .25 and wake up the whole mountain by nipping the head off one) and there's going to be a nice long lazy summer of good evenings for this coming up. I'll be putting in a new safe to store shotgun cartridges so I reckon that's as good an excuse as any for a new rifle too.

only advantages .22 has is its dirt cheap and a lot quieter
on the mod front i use a sak on my .22 and find it good
i use a nikko gold crown 4-12x42 on my .22 aswell and have never found it lacking but for a .17 maybe some more mag might come in handy if thats your thing

    ............... I reckon it'll probably be a CZ 452 American (They make it left-handed).

    Good choice ;)

............... 1. Is there any good reason to get the .22LR over the .17HMR other than cost?

    Less noise
............... 2. What should I scope it with? Don't need huge magnification, want to keep it nice and light and handy.

    no need for anymore than something in 3-9 x 50 or 4 -12 x 50
............... 3. What's a good mod? I'll probably cut it back to 20" so a mod should balance it nicely.

SAK for either .22lr or .17 HMR

Paul O'Halloran, especially if you've no trade in ;)

Cheers bunny. I'm thinking more like a 40-44mm objective, nice and light and low profile. Top mag of 10-12x sounds like more than enough too. Cheers on the mod and dealer recommendation. Will have to see what he quotes me tomorrow now. Any scope recommendations? It'll get used at night, so glass needs to be fairly respectable and reticle useful.

    Illum retictle
Most of the cheaper brands carry them.
A fine illum reticle gives a bigger sight picture.

Some just give a red dot which would be ideal @ 50-150 yards at night

A second hand one of these would be in your price range I reckon

It depends whether you use a lamp or not, with a lamp you don't need illum.
Without a lamp you need illum in dusk conditions.

Myself and dev110 were out foxing recently, at dusk he could not see his reticle, but he could easily see mine.

Although for low light I'd go 50mm Min as a personal pref

Parralax adj can be a pain at night as you have so little time to get it right. I leave mine ~50yards so just needs a small tweak if I get time to turn up mag under a lamp.

For day bunnies, you normally get time to adj, however today I shot a few snap shooting without adj

    All of what BunnyShooter said.
The Bushnell Trophy range of scope will go good on that setup your looking at.

I use a Bushnell 3200 10x40 fixed scope on my CZ 22lr and find it good for any shot that I can take with the 22lr, was shooting clays @300m with it, it would also go well on a HMR

Seriously considering one of those Bushnell's myself ;)

Was chatting to Paul earlier. He reckoned it'd be about €500 for the basic rifle in left hand drive, which sounds pretty decent. Still not sure on the scope, might just buy the rifle and put things together as I go. I have some stuff to get rid of anyway, and I've a spare scope floating around here somewhere I could stick on it for the time being.

Thanks very much for the offer there. :) I'll see how I end up doing this and might end up calling you up on that one. Will probably be another while before I make any moves. Have to pick up my shotgun yet and pay the balance, so figure a while to let the dust settle there. I found Paul very personable on the phone, didn't sound like he was bursting for a shíte and dying to be rid of you like so many dealers do on the phone and had a good idea of what he would be able to do and the sort of prices involved. Straightforward, personable and up front. I liked that a lot. Can see why he has such a good name.
