Do you have a house phone? Do you use it? Or do you just use a mobile phone?

Since I moved out of home almost 4 years ago I have never had a house phone. I just don't see the point of it, if you're trying to reach me, I might not be home, but I'll have my mobile on me whether I'm at home or out of the house.

I use it when i have no credit (which is rare). The only time people ring it is for my nanny and telesales

I might be the one and only person here who hates mobile phones :D

However, I have friends and family in Germany, and 400 free minutes/month from UPC, I am just glad to have the house phone

Phone comes as part of the Eircom pack which gives me the internetz but I never use the phone.

The old man has one and its still handy for daytime land line calls.

Eircom are killing it. I remember 10 years ago it used to be reasonably priced. I'd never use a mobile if I was near the house phone.

Then the constant line rental increases, the minimum call charge, the call setup fee, rounding up to the nearest cent. Still they have no clue while they're inches away from bankruptcy

I rarely use the house phone.

Nope, thankfully. Got my UPC broadband, and if I need to make a call for a long period of time, I'll skypeout.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,442 ✭✭✭Firetrap

Yes but only because I've no other choice for da broadband. Rarely use the house phone to be honest. Eircom are shooting themselves in the foot with their extortionate line rental charges. I know quite a few people who have either gotten rid of their landlines or when they moved, didn't get one in at all.

Nah, never saw the point. I always have my mobile phone on me, use skype/voip for long distance.

For the kids who don't know. A house phone is like a normal mobile phone except it's attached to a building where you think the person your calling might be.

use the house phone for 1850 numbers only

I reckon the landline will be made more or less redundant asides from businesses in the next 5 years, there is simply no need for them anymore due to mobile phones/interwebs

Never seen the point of a house phone, I could add it by paying 5 euro more on the UPC bill but I couldnt be bothered as I have the mobile phone

It used to be a lot cheaper than using a mobile but with recent price increases its not worth it anymore. I do use a fixed IP phone for international calls though

I've never had a house phone and never will. Waste of money.

have it because of eircom broadband.

only use it if ringing abroad (which is rare tbh) or dont have credit (also rare because of free texts)

Aint gots one myself. Only real reason I'd have to get one is for internet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,241 ✭✭✭Sanjuro

I'm stuck with Eircom. One of the most useless organisations in Ireland. And I'm also stuck with their crappy broadband and telephone deal. So I have a phone. I never use it though. Tried to go to just broadband, but the deals are crap, and it's actually cheaper to have broadband and telephone. God, I hate Eircom.

We have one and use it all the time. We have absolutely dismal mobile coverage where I live, regardless of the type of mobile or network that we're on. Sometimes if I've been around the house for a day or two without going anywhere and then drive about a mile down the road, I get a heap of missed call notifications and texts once I pass a certain point. I'd be totally cut off if it weren't for Skype and the house phone.

Land line and all calls to landlines worldwide are included in the broadband package and I don't have a mobile so in as much as I ever use the phone it's always the land line.

I have one because we have a monitored alarm (not with eircom), but because I run a business from home I was able to be an o2 business customer, great rates, and it goes through the business :)
(use NTL for broadband and no complaints there)

Weird. I can't imagine not having a housephone. Ours rings constantly. More often than the mobile!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,274 ✭✭✭_feedback_

I must be missing something with the Eircom thing. I have eircom broadband, obviously need a land line connection for that. But I don't own a "house phone". What's all this about having to have a house phone because you're with Eircom?

I only kept mine because of the monitored alarm, if it wasn't fir that I wouldn't have it.

Have always had one, though rarely use it. When I changed to UPC a phone was included,so it's there, still unused. Some fecker in India tried to sell me eircom mobile while I was canceling their land line.
