Appeal disability allowance claim

I had applied for disability allowance last Oct for bipolar disorder(manic depression) and got a letter today saying it was rejected, despite a letter from my consultant psychiatrist saying I am unfit for work.

Am absolutely gutted but now realise it's not uncommon to be refused on first attempt and I plan on appealing.
Has anyone been through this appeals process? Anyone have any advice?

I have an appointment to see my psychiatrist in approx 4 weeks but I'm going to try to see him earlier as I need to send off my appeal in the next 21 days.
