Dermot Ahern - Still has state car!

I was going to Oriel Park last night to watch Dundalk v Linfield. There was obviously a lot of security around the ground :). The Gardai had the road closed off, and as I got to the cordon up pulls Dermot Ahern in the State car, with his usual Garda driver. Of course he gets to drive straight up to Oriel Park.

I heard before that ex Justice Ministers retain the state car. Does anyone know how long for?

I was well annoyed when I saw him in it. The pure arrogance of the man.

He is not yet an ex-Minister.

He resigned on the 19th January as Minister, same night as a load of them resigned.

yes he is an ex minister, he retired early, which entitled him to an extra dividend of approxemetly 80,000 euro. ministers recieve this for having to retire early, in his case roughly 3 weeks, btw as a result of the recent finannce bill it is tax free.

That's right, he did resign in January

But the offical website updated last week still has him as Minister.

I've no issue with the Minister for Justice having a State car. Not all ministers need one but Minister for Justice does. They have DPP files and there are security issues.

But who is our Minister at the moment?

You're right that former justice ministers retain it. Not sure how long for. As long as the Garda Commissioner considers necessary I suppose.

Correct. Apologies for my lapse in concentration.

He is ex justice minister and AFAIK they get Garda protection and state car for a pretty long time if not forever.

Under new FG government Kenny has stated that only Taoiseach, president and minister of justice will have car and Garda whihc would seem fair enough.

He has also stated that ex Taoisigh will lose their cars, so not sure if that will also apply to ex ministers of justice ?

I can see an argument for them keeping their security.

I am not allowed discuss …

I presume Bertie will have to keep car/security.
IIRC, Bertie made big changes to the privileges of ex-taosigh, not hard to see why now.

The Real IRA were only saying a few weeks ago that Ireland is a failed state and that the politicians have destroyed the South.

Ehh Kenny's proposals are that ex taoisigh lose the cars.

The only one he might care about is Cosgrove as after Garretts contributions he might want to see him take a bus and he probably reckons Richard only started getting uppidty after big brother John came back from New York.

As for the rest (reynolds, ahern, biffo) they are all ffers so no skin off his nose.

Yeah the real IRA, much like all the other IRAs never helped make anything be much of a success.

We might have a failed state, but it would be a hell of a lot worse if those eejits had anything to do with it.

My point was that Bertie will clearly need a car and protection because somebody may try to kill him at some stage over the next few years.

In the Sunday Times a few weeks ago, they had an article on Republican groups who are planning a new bombing campaign in England.
They see Bertie as a traitor over the GFA and his role in the collapse of this state.

If they fancy showing off they might rid the state of a few of these leeches?

Even so, if a former Taoiseach is assassinated because of a decision Kenny made.
    It just may be shortsighted.

No quarrel from me on that - nor would I shed a tear for Bertie in the event.
