I wonder will they bring out a couple of different versions of the iPhone 5?

I read a very convincing post on macrumours last week about how the rumoured iPhone Nano is a nonsense.

Don't see it happening but hey, stranger things have.

Yeah, I cant see it happening. Apple already have a low budget iphone, the 8Gb 3Gs. More likely an iphone 4 with smaller capacity will be announced along with the iphone 5.

I was thinking maybe an iPhone 5 with old tech. Put in a nice new case and people won't care

I'd be stunned if we don't see an iPhone that targets the PAYG market in the next 18 months.

it's meant to be aimed at the developing countries. It's also to get back their ground they are losing to low cost entry level androids

These iPhone nano rumours pop up every year. And every-time the bloggers and newspapers respond to them as if hearing them for the first time. They're rubbish!

A cheaper PAYG iPhone for the US market is probably likely at some point, but if it ever happens it's just going to be a previous generation iPhone with 8GB for a 100 less than the current low end model.

That's essentially their budget solution at the moment, and it's not really ideal. I think that when we do see the iPhone nano it'll be quite different from whatever the full iPhone looks like. I wouldn't be surprised if the iPhone gets bumped to a 4 inch display with a totally new design, while the nano would have 3 inch display (320x480), 8GB, 300 dollars unlocked - maybe 200 for psychological reasons with the 200 dollar contract iphone - and funky design in various vibrant colours.

I keep on thinking of when the iPod mini was introduced, a product that filled the requirement for a cheaper model, complementing the higher end device while not entirely cannibalizing it, while at the same time being an attractive prospect all on it's own.

The iPod mini was a music device though. It spent most of its time in people's pocket. A phone is quite different. I think Apple will be very reluctant to go messing around with the iPhone's screen size. It could have a lot consequences for the OS and the App Store.

I reckon the the iPhone 5 will get a bigger screen, while the iPhone 4 will be sold along side it for a cheaper price ala the iPhone 4 and 3GS. The fact it has a smaller screen (3.5") than the iPhone 5, the media will dub it the "iPhone Nano".

You've really taken that too literally, my point is that - in my opinion - the iPhone nano will be to the iPhone as the iPod mini was to the iPod. I can't imagine too many consequences of a half inch difference as long as they have a 320x480 resolution and same screen ratio.

The screen is small enough as it is. Manufacturers such as HTC, Motorola, Samsung etc are even moving towards 3.7"-4.3" screens in their Android devices. In fact, I dont think that they even released a phone with a screen under 3.7" in their high end ranges.

There's always the whiff of hand-me-down about this strategy and I think it'll be easier to market a cheaper model in a totally different case as a whole new device even if internally it's pretty much the previous model.

It'll be Apple's budget offering so it makes no difference what's going on in the oppositions high end, all that matters is that'll be smaller/worse than the iPhone.

If it's marketed right and significantly cheaper it will still sell as it is still a great phone with great specs.

Ah but Apple never like to market things as a "budget" device. Offing a phone with a 2.8" screen and limited specs stinks of a budget phone, like HTC have with their Wildfire and Samsung with their Europa.

The user experience is paramount for Apple and forcing people to interact with a smaller touch screen, even if it's only an inch smaller, isn't something I can see them doing. I think if they are going to offer an iPhone for a cheaper market then it will be the same screen size but with less features, memory, etc, which might work if used in conjunction with a significantly overhauled MobileMe/cloud service. But even that's unlikely imo.

Whatever happens, I think screen size will remain consistent for all iPhone models. Personally though I think 3.5" is perfect and would only welcome a larger screen if it didn't add to the size of the case. i.e. by shaving off some of the bezel.
