Mismatched wheels?

Does anyone else have a frickin garage full of front wheels??

My trusty old Shimano WH550 rear is getting a bit "crunchy" in the hub department, and when you spin her up she shakes her booty like Shakira :)

So what to do? - Don't think you can buy them anymore, and a repair is probably uneconomical. So do I buy a rear that doesn't match the front, or do I throw a perfectly good front in with the other odd shoes and buy a fresh pair?

(Goddamn CSS and their sold out special offer... grrrr)

What type of bearings are they? Shimano seem to favour cup and cone systems, in which case they are pretty cheap to service assuming you haven't damaged the races or cones (check for pitting with a ball point pen).

It's just a question of the right size ball bearings, some grease and your time...not really less economical than shelling out for a new wheel. Plus, you get the satisfaction of having done it yourself.

it should be an easy and cheap DIY fix but if its been used like the a while the chances are the races have become pitted. worth opening up to find out anyway, even if its pitted it should run alot better after a clean out and new grease
