White to a wedding

I am going to a wedding this June and I have a fabulous white dress with a black ribbon around the waist and I was wondering if it would be OK to wear it to the wedding with black shoes and maybe a black fasinator? Or would it be a bit inappropriate as the bride's dress is also going to be white!

Don't do it. I don't think anyone other than the bride should EVER wear white to a wedding. You know the bride is wearing white.

There are so many styles of wedding dresses out now that have black/ other coloured belts too, so the ribbon belt wouldn't make your dress look like a non- wedding dress.

    Don't do it.

I would definitely advise against this too.

Just no! There are so many other coloured dresses out there that you could wear.

I'd say it's ok if you accessorise up to your eyeballs - black waist ribbon, black cardigan/bolero/whatever, black shoes and handbag etc
Otherwise check with the bride or don't wear it at all

Don't do it! Unless the dress is white with some sort of print on it it's not really okay.

No I really don't think it's fair - I'm sure there'll be other occasions you can wear your dress, this is the brides big day

The bolero/ cardigan will more than likely come off during the day/ night though. I've seen photos of a wedding recently where someone wore a white dress to a wedding, and any photos from the waist up, you wouldn't have known that she wasn't the bride. The photos of her and the bride looked so bad, I'm sure the bride was p!ssed off (I don't know the bride, she is a friend of a friend). My friend who attended the wedding said that the girl who wore the white dress was the talk of the day, ("how dare she.. attention seeker" etc).

Im a bloke and i know that a girl should not were white to a wedding. How would you like if some one wore a white dress to your wedding the white dress is for the bride.

Absolutely not. Even if it doesn't look like a wedding dress people will bitch about it. Save yourself the hassle.

Personally i wouldn't give a damn if somebody is wearing their wedding dress at my wedding but I would avoid wearing white at somebody else's wedding. Avoid the hassle, you'll be able to wear the white dress some other time.

Don't ask her about it, and don't do it. It'll seem a bit disrespectful.

It's a lot more common now to see female guests in white at weddings - it used to be far more taboo than it is now. Especially if you're accessorising with other colours. I wouldn't go out of my way to buy a white dress for a wedding (unless it was my own!) but if you already have it and make a bit of an effort to play down the whiteness with accessories I don't see why not.

    It's a definite no-no.

But I presume you've picked that sentiment up from the other posters here ;)

Personally, I'd say ask the bride and see how she feels.

If it was my wedding, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest if 1 person or 10 people wore white, though not everyone is like that.:(

No definetely not. Dont think you should ask the bride either. Just do not wear the white dress.

Hi all - just wondering what would be the consensus with regard to wearing a cream coloured dress?

I have a beige/cream coloured dress, which I wore to a Summer wedding for one of my cousins. I thought it was nice for a Summer wedding, and got few compliments, including from the bride... The material, and style, however, are very different from a wedding dress.

I read afterwards that it wasn't the thing to wear cream to a wedding, so now I'm wondering if I should wear it again...

I wouldnt personally wear an all-cream dress to a wedding. Cream, with another colour no problem, but I think block white/ivory/cream to a wedding is a bit risky. If it was just the afters, then yes, but especially if it was a church wedding, then no.

It really depends on the dress and how its styled to be honest imo, but I always try and steer clear of block white/cream at a traditional wedding

Such a good point ElleEm - maybe people should think how they'd look in photos with a white/cream dress. Prob just about ok at the start if they've loads of non-bridal accessories, but at the end of the night, with shoes kicked off, wrap gone, etc it's going to look very bridal in photos.

I wouldn't OP. It's the bride's big day and chances are she wont be too happy, You are better to steer clear of nude/cream/white for weddings.

I wouldn't advise it, like everyone else. Even if you know the bride well and she had even said it was ok there will still be other people who will think it was on purpose or even mistake you for the bride.

A friend of mine wore a cream (appeared white in photos) knee length dress to two weddings last summer, in photos from the waist up she looked like the bride, and with her boyfriend in a full suit they looked like the bride and groom. At the second wedding the bride made a dig about it, was quite annoyed at her, my friend seems to have been oblivious to the fact that her dress was the only other dress the same shade and style as a wedding dress, coupled with a pretty upstyle it was the most ridiculous choice for a wedding guest.

Hi all - thanks for your feedback. Looks like I need to put aside my nice cream dress for some other occasion also.....

yeah i think there is too much red tape around this. I don't see much of an issue with it once it doesn't look like a wedding dress and you are not standing at the top of the altar!
