Depends on the type of scanner. On a millimeter wave scanner it would be clearly visible so it would be at the discretion of whoever is operating it/looking at the images.

Why do you ask? If it's only a USB stick throw it in the box with your keys and wallet like everything else.

There the scanners I'm on about(the box).
Goin abroad so want to bring college work with me, as its all on the memory key would the scanner wipe it(Like it did the MP3 player)?

Firstly backup your data online using box.com or something like that.

Secondly, I doubt the airport scanner wiped the data of the mp3 player. More likely it got damaged somehow making the data inaccessible. So I don't think there's any issue.

No, the airport scanner will not wipe your USB Key.

But as a previous poster suggested, use an on-line system to store your data.

It will protect against the more mundane risks of simply losing the USB key as well.

Oh I thought you meant would they allow it through. Well in that case there should be no reason why it would clear the data on it. But they probably won't let you through with it in your pocket anyway so you'll have to put it through the xray which shouldn't damage it either.

yeah im reckoning that was a coincidence that it corrupted at a similar time. maybe it hates pressurized cabins?

No, pressure would not have any effect.

    Possible causes.
    • Component Infant Mortality
    • Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
    • Shock/Vibrations
    • Heat
    • Moisture
    • Simple File Corruption due to bad write operation(s)
