Google Authenticator App

Anyone try the Google Authenticator app for having a two step login for your gmail account. I am trying to use it, but it won't verify the code for me on the initial test. I think the codes are generated as some function of the current time and the time on my phone is correct, so just wondering did anyone get this working.

    Thanks

uninstall the app and go again. when u initially set it up yuo should get a verification code via text message which you put in on the web interface when reading the setup instructions for the authenticator app

i got it working, but whats the point, it only gives you the 6 digit code that gets texted to you anyway?
surely it should allow you to get the long text codes for non 2 step apps?

no unfortunetely the google authenticator app is purely for accessing your gmail, docs, drive and calendar via web interface.

to grant third party apps access (such as google talk client on your phone, pc, an imap connection via phone or outlook etc) you would need to generate application speecific passwords. i presume you know how to do this, if not just ask and ill tell ya. but yeah its a pain in fairness. thankfully once theyre done you don't need to worry about it again.

thanks, i know how to do it alright, but i think its impossible via phone (right?)
an app that lets you access passwords, via your phone, that are texted to your phone anyway, just seems a bit pointless :)

well you can set it to just text u all the time if yuo have an old phone that doesnt support Apps.

but the idea would be to use the app and set a backup phone number for a text message in the event that u loose phone. you can even print out backup codes to keep in ur wallet or something in the event that u lose the phone.

but u shud be able to generate the applciation specific passwords via the browser on ur phone if its any good. just log into your gmail (via web browser) but make sure u choose the desktop format so youl get all the features as if u were on a PC. it might be a bit annoying but shud be possible.

once ur in yuour account then u can access the application specific menu .

MIGHT be easier just typing this into your phone browser (should be a direct link to the page u want ) ... https://accounts.google.com/b/0/SmsAuthConfig
