Found this on the soccer forum, disgusting thing to do to an a bird.

BOGOTA — Panama defender Luis Moreno is facing sanctions after he kicked an injured owl that had landed on the field during a match for his Colombian club Deportivo Pereira against Atletico Junior.
The owl, which serves as a mascot for the Atletico Junior team and lives in the stadium, was being treated Monday at a local veterinary clinic in Barranquilla. The bird was expected to recover and had only a minor fracture to its right leg.
Fans of the Atletico Junior team shouted "murderer, murderer," after the incident on Sunday. The owl had landed injured near the corner of the field and was struck by a pass between Deportivo players, causing the referee to halt the game. Moreno then walked over and kicked it about three meters (yards) to get the owl off the pitch.
He said he did not know the bird was a good-luck charm for the opposition.
"I want to apologize to the fans," Moreno told reporters after the match. "I was not trying to hurt the owl. I did it (kicked) to see if it would fly."
Pereira club president Francisco Javier Lopez said the player would be punished and he could also face sanctions from Colombian football's governing body.
"It made me very angry that he kicked the little animal," said Atletico Junior player Luia Paez, who scored one of the goals in Atletico's 2-1 victory. "It was already injured by being struck by the ball. I said a bunch of awful thing to him (Moreno). I was really angry."
Animal welfare officials said no laws in Colombia exist against cruelty to animals.

If it's a simple fracture he'll be out of training for 8 weeks or so and should be back in the team within 3 months.

Saw the vid on facebook, poor owl :(

'I did it to see if it would fly' ... ?
Seriously? A footballer, who would have a pretty powerful kick gave the poor owl a boot. Such a stupid thing, yeah kick the bird that'll help shift it if it's injured.

Some people just don't care about animals and obviously that chap is one of them.

The poor owl has died. That soccer player should be tarred and feathered for what he's done.

Just a quick update on the poor owl
Sad news out of Colombia: the owl who was kicked in the face by a soccer player, after it landed on the field during a match has died

Yesterday, the owl, which was the pseudo mascot and good luck charm of Barranquilla’s Atletico Junior team, landed on the pitch after it injured its wing. As referees waited for the owl’s handlers to come scoop it up, a player from the opposing side came over and booted it.
It’s important to note, the kick isn’t what directly led to the animal’s death. The bird died of respiratory arrest early this morning due to stress, which resulted from the amount of people that were handling it after it was booted.
Still, people are (understandably) mad at Moreno. As soon as he kicked the owl, he was showered with boos from the Barranquilla home crowd and met with chants of “Murderer! Murderer!” He was escorted from the field by armed police, faced protests from animal rights activists and was condemmed by the league commissioner.
According to Radio Santa Fe, Moreno faces one to three months in jail and a maximum fine of 50,000 pesos ($26), in addition to suspensions/sanctions from the league.

Kicks the owl to get him off the field...my a***e!
That was a full force soccer kick to the poor owl who just got a full force ball in the head.
Ive had that to my head before and its painful when unexpected.

I hope he gets suspended or fined!

In all fairness the most of the people on the soccer forum are voicing their disgust at this story too. I feel you are wrong to say "this is getting a laugh on the soccer forum".

There were plenty of posts condemning what happened.

On these threads you'll always have posters throwing in puns and jokes.
    It's doesn't mean they weren't disgusted.

I don't think your thread title is correct

    It wasn't getting a laugh.

He was being berated for his actions up to the point where I ended up issuing a half dozen infractions for people insulting the player in question.

Don't let the truth get in the way of a sensationalist thread title though.

ANYONE who laughs/makes puns at something like this is just ignorant, and they are only broadcasting that fact to the Boards community. If tehy want to look 'thick' in a public forum, let them - best ignored.

I have been reading this owl story on many sites/forums now, but I'm sad to say that the only place I have seen more than maybe one person "lol" at the video of the owl being kicked is in the Norwegian football/soccer forum I sometimes read. In fact there are lots of people finding it hilarious there. Sad but true. I guess the kind of people that "lol's" in almost every sentence does not represent the average football fan.

Gobsh*te, no other word for a cretin that would do something like that

Disgusted. Things like this are the main reason I prefer my dog to most people.

The Panamanian player has since become a hate figure in Colombia.

"My family is very worried about what happened because an entire country is against me. I believe what happened is regrettable and I apologised to the entire country," he said.
I'm delighted he's getting so much abuse for killing the Barn owl:).....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,964 ✭✭✭ToniTuddle

His apology was the biggest load of crap in that video. He aint sorry at all only sorry that he is recieving abuse now from the whole thing.

Watching the video of the kick is not nice at all. I mean why kick it? Esp if the owl handlers were going to be making their way onto the pitch

what no one has mentioned is that his pathetic apology:
He said he did not know the bird was a good-luck charm for the opposition.
"I want to apologize to the fans,"
So he's not sorry for kicking the poor bird, he's only sorry he offended the fans!
    SERIOUSLY!!!!!?????
This is making me so furious
