I installed Ubuntu on my laptop but I can't get things like youtube which comes up an error occurred please try later. I also can't get cityville or farmville to work on facebook. I can play movies no problem.

Yesterday facebook was saying I needed to update flash. I'm using firefox when I go to
tools then plug-ins it says no plug-ins are in use maybe that has something to do with it?

In Ubuntu if you go to the package manager (called Software Center or something) and search for "restricted", there should be a package called something like "Ubuntu Restricted Extras".

Installing that will give you flash, lots of codecs and IIRC Java (basically the useful stuff that can't be included on the CD for legal reasons).

I done a search and what came up was a few things but one was commonly restricted packages used on Ubuntu but it's already installed.

Under it is a list with all the boxes to their left all are ticked.

    Gstreamer extra plugins
    Adobe flash plugin
Gstreamer for plugin for mms, wavpack, quicktime, mustime
    Gstreamer ffmpeg video plugin
Gstreamer plugin for using MS windows binary code
    Icedtea jave plugin
    fluendo mp3 decoder Gstreamer plugin

open a terminal (applications->accessories->terminal) and type this:

    sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer

    restart firefox.

    That should be it.

    Thanks for the reply.

Youtube is now working but games on facebook still aren't working? On cityville it loads all the way on the line but there's a FLV things blink and it's red colour. Farmville won't work.

I think your problem might be the icedtea java plugin.
Be a freedom hater, and look in your package manager for sun-java6-plugin.
It's a lot more compatible with those kind of things.

    1. Enable the medibuntu repositories.

To be able to read any kind of media (movies, audio, DVD, ...), and to install software like Skype or Google Earth, you'll have to enable the medibuntu repositories.

This single long command line (work with all Ubuntu releases) will enable the Medibuntu Repository AND the medibuntu keyring:

    sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/`lsb_release -cs`.list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list; sudo apt-get -q update; sudo apt-get --yes -q --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring; sudo apt-get -q update

    2. Install non-free-codecs

The non-free-codecs meta-package will install a lot of very useful packages, and includes ubuntu-restricted-extras: support for MP3 and various other audio formats (GStreamer plugins), Microsoft fonts, Java runtime environment, Flash plugin, w64codecs or w32codecs depending on your architecture, and much more.

    sudo apt-get install non-free-codecs

If you want to know what exactly will be installed, here is the list:

    cabextract gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse libavcodec-extra-52 libavutil-extra-50 libfaac0 libmjpegtools-1.9 libmp3lame0 libmp4v2-0 libopenjpeg2 libquicktime1 libx264-98 libxvidcore4 non-free-codecs ttf-mscorefonts-installer ubuntu-restricted-extras unrar w32codecs (Total about 60 MB)

    3. Install more codecs, DVD support, VLC and mplayer:VLC Media Player - Ubuntu Jaunty useful Guide

The libdvdcss2 package is essential to play encrypted DVDs. VLC is probably the best media player around.

sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2 gxine libxine1-ffmpeg vlc mplayer mencoder

If you want to know what exactly will be installed, here is the list:

    esound-clients esound-common gxine libaudio2 libaudiofile0 libcddb2 libdvbpsi6 libdvdcss2 libebml2 libesd0 libiso9660-7 liblzo2-2 libmatroska2 libmng1 libopenal1 libqt4-dbus libqt4-xml libqtcore4 libqtgui4 libsdl-image1.2 libsvga1 libtar libupnp3 libva-x11-1 libvcdinfo0 libvdpau1 libvlc5 libvlccore4 libxcb-keysyms1 libxcb-randr0 libxcb-shape0 libxcb-xv0 libxine1 libxine1-bin libxine1-console libxine1-ffmpeg libxine1-misc-plugins libxine1-x mencoder mplayer vlc vlc-data vlc-nox vlc-plugin-notify vlc-plugin-pulse (Total about 81 MB)

I searched for it in package manager but nothing found for sun-java6-plugin.
it's no longer in the main repos. you must enable the canonical partners respos then reload and you should see it

How about installing chromium or chrome.
It comes with it's own java and flash.

What you did to get it working last time? Installed non free codecs/flashplugin-installer? Try to do the same again.

It's definitely in the partner repos if you're using maverick.
Can you confirm what version of ubuntu you installed?
Most people will assume it's up to date, and the package is not
in partner if it's a really old release.

Once you have the tick mark beside partner, you need to refresh the lists before searching. Might be called 'Check' again depending on version.

You say above you'd no luck installing chrome.
    What went wrong with it?
You should be able to just go to google.com/chrome and click on the download button.
It'll download a package that'll ask for your password, but it should just work.

If by any chance you've decided to testdrive the alpha of Ubuntu Natty 11.04 which isn't even finished yet,
there are lots of reasons why this isn't working. Either wait for it to be released, or scrap the install, and
go for 10.10 - you can upgrade when natty is really released for general consumption.

If it is the case, and you want to persevere, this page may help.
Open a terminal, and copy and paste where appropriate.

Since ye seem to be having difficulties, have a go with Ubuntu Tweak, which can configure and install a lot of stuff:
