Labour's Joe Kemmy has made doorstep comments during the campaign that Noonan has been promised it. I also heard the same from 2 FG councillors in Limerick.

    Interesting.
Does away with the 'finance role for Noonan' brigade. It was always unlikely given his age, not being ageist or anything, but it is 24/7. I'm sure he would be able for it, but it would prob kill him.

Seems like a waste of Noonan's talents, TBH.

Although he has shown himself to have little tolerance for bull and bluster, so that'd be a definite plus for the country if he applies that to the role.

i cant understand why FG don't go into government without Labour. or, rather why Labour can't do what they always wanted and create a left right divide by going into opposition. In which case FG should propose a long standing independent ( with more then say three terms e.g Lowry or Mattie Mc Grath ) a Labour ( Quinn ) or even a FF person e.g Cuiv O ) for the job.

It seems to me this wont happen and Labour will do anything to get in to government so the "ideological differences" will last as long as the second cup of coffee.

No way will Noonan's talents be wasted.

What exaactly does being Ceann Comhairle entail? I mean, other than occasionally fiddling their expenses, I always thought of them just as someone who tries to keep the peace in the Dáil. Do they have other duties? If not, I don't understand why they'd want to put forward talented politicians to the role. Like, I'd have thought Noonan would just be wasted in the role, for example.

    Michael Ring

Massive conjecture at the count on Saturday from every side that it would be Ring, he has to pacify him with something and a major ministry will not be a possibility. And fair dues, Michael at this stage has a fair idea how things operate having been thrown out so many times himself. They may need the Leas Ceann Comhairle sitting beside him to keep manners on him though............

Listening to the commentary on RTE over the weekend and it was thought that Olivia Mitchell would be offered the post.

I think Brendan Howlin - Labour, Wexford - was leas Ceann Comhairle so maybe he's in line. Assuming the coalition is consummated they will not have number worries so can give it to one of their own.

If Labour want a definite number of ministers I suppose this could be used as a lever by Fine Gael to be counted as one, given he will be automatically returned next election.

He is automatically re-elected, not automatically reinstated

    apparemment not;)

from the Oireachtas web connection point:

    "Role of the Ceann Comhairle
The first business of a new Dáil after a General Election is to elect from its Members the Ceann Comhairle (Speaker / Chairperson) who presides impartially and with authority over the business and proceedings of the House. The Standing Orders (Rules) of Dáil Éireann prescribe the powers and duties of the Ceann Comhairle in relation to Parliamentary business e.g. the proper conduct of debate, Parliamentary Questions, amendments to Bills and motions, disorderly conduct. Under the Constitution, Dáil Éireann also elects a Leas-Cheann Comhairle (Deputy Chairperson).

The Ceann Comhairle formally opens each day's sitting by reading the official prayer."

the bit about the prayer could need some updating.
Interesting too about O. Mitchell, first woman and all that.

I'd thought Ring would have been ideal, bellowing out of him. But what if some figure of national importance called on a visit to the Dail and was introduced and welcomed by Ring, what would they make of us.:pac:

Michael Ring is the biggest heckler in the Dáil! He's been thrown out plenty of times

If he gets it, it's definitely a case of poacher turned gamekeeper.

I would be more worried what would happen if he told someone to sit down and they didn't!!

you need someone with a bit of presence and a bit of personality, we don't want another Rory O'Hanlon. Maybe that's just the way he came across on TV.

The role of CC needs to be changed in that the members of the Dail have an open vote and its not a pol appointment in the gift of the govt.

    What talents are they exactly?

Making a balls of various ministries: Health, Commerce, Justice?

Leading Fine Gael to it's lowest number of seats since 1944?

    they/them/theirs
