Can Windows 7 Backup co-exist with other files (manually copied over) on the same external hard-drive (ehd)?

Would it be best to have a separate ehd for backup and another one for storing files?

Can anyone recommend a decent backup program?

I got a win vista upgraded to 7 and i bought a hdrive same make Targa lidls and i've no problems doing backup once a week.I don't recommend buyin a pc in a s/market i made a mistake there they do nothing at all for you.The man in the shop who understands the tekky stuff in ordinary man's language is the best bet but some young fellahs are to be avoided they're full of guff n bluff. The 30 + man is your best bet.I make security top priority all the time so i never have problems of any kind.Avoid free toolbars.I don't know why you have a problem.I have loadza different materiel along with backups on the external hard drive.

My problem was with the 1TB disk being constantly unreadable by Win7 and WinXP.

For some reason, both couldn't cope with such a large partition, esp if after backup had run. Had to reformat the disk after repowering the disk.

Ended up chopping the disk into 200GB partitions. So far, I've hadn't any problems with either computers trashing the disk. The primary machine is now able to backup to one of the partitions and I can manually copy files to the other partitions.
