    Hi Folks,
Just bought a very cheap 03 Alfa 156 1.6ts today, last timingbelt and waterpump changed @ 74k, car now has 118k miles and i am well aware that this should have been changed ages ago but it was'nt !!! I am not driving the car at the moment and wont until they have been replaced. The issue i have is the variator is pretty noisy when engine is idling (sounds like a diesel) I know very little about this tbh so i am wondering is it a big job to get this sorted?? from what i can see from other forums it needs to be done when the timing belt and waterpump are being replaced. Will the noise be completely gone when sorted and what kind of cost can i expect on top of the belt and pump? Any help would be greatly appreciated:)

Full service, timing belt, water pump and variator replacement on a 1.6 TSpark just cost me €980. That's a 147, but they're identical engines.

The noise is gone completely. The engine is also much smoother at low revs, with a bit more low-end power.

variator is best done while doing the belt. takes a extra 15 minutes or so when doing a belt change. they cost about 110e iirc. i had 3 156's and there is a fantastic indie in wexford who will do it for you at a very good price. pm me for his number.

I had a few Alfas, that diesal noise can be pretty annoying when your driving a petrol lol. The variator from Alfa themselves is in around 120 or so and then you have a write up on the part if your mechanic is suppling it. However you can refurb the one in the car by simply replacing a spring and washer. Your mechanic may not do it though as he may think there is more money in it for him by supplying you with a new variator.
Timing belt, tensioner & waterpump supplied and fitted inclusive of the variator cost me 700 euro. You could end up paying more though.. Good luck with the Alfa lad!

My mechanic will have no problem using the existing one if its as simple as replacing a spring and washer, will be done as a nixer so the entire job will be done fairly cheap thank god. Thanks for the replies :)

You can buy the variator rebuild kit online, I'm sure ebay would have them.
As far as I know Alfa themselves will sell you a rebuild kit for the variator but I would assume you would get it cheaper online.
