Responsibilities and liabilities of a Witness Signatory

Has a ‘witness’ signatory on a contract that did not actually witness the signing of the contract, committed an offence? Or is the 'witness' signatory liable in anyway should the signatories to the contract turn out to be wronged due to forged signatures? Thanks in advance m
