Hi, I hope that it is OK to ask. I am not a good knitter and am time poor but I would like to be able to knit something for babies. I have a son who is over 9 months old and he was luckily given some great hand knitted cardigans/hats by one of my hubby's work collegues. We are expecting a daughter now so I would be very greatful for any ideas for toys/simple clothes for my children or at least some suggestions for where to start looking. Thanks.

    Hi!

Ravelry.com is a great resource with a forum - place for ideas and patterns with lots of enthusiastic knitters to help. It's a really lovely idea - hope you get knitting soon :)

Thanks, will look into that - I would like to be able to knit my children something, last thing that I remember knitting was a scarf years ago when my hubby and I were first dating.

    I agree, Ravelry is fantastic.

Also check out knittingpatterncentral.com. They have loads and loads of free knitting patterns.
And they're all sorted by category so you can just look for the baby ones.

    Happy knitting!

Just be aware of the differences between US and European terminology when looking for patterns. Knitting is not too bad, apart from needle sizes, but crochet has significant differences. Yarn thicknesses have different names.

http://www.knitting-crochet.com/found/yarn.html there are lots of conversion charts for needles and yarn on the net, this is one that might be useful.

Once you pick a pattern, YouTube is your friend. Anytime I can't remember how to do a certain stitch it's where I go.

Once you're on ravelry check out some of the things I knitted and see if you like any of them and I can help you.

    Another knitting newbie here...

Maybe its just me, but I find ravelry an over-complicated website, and hard to navigate.

    I much prefer knittinghelp.com

This is one of the easiest but good patterns I've seen. Will start as soon as I find some v. cheap cotton.

I think they have different functions, one is to find patterns for the most part and the other is to learn to knit. I learned to knit mostly from a book (Ultimate Knitting Bible) and from youtube videos. I use ravelry to find patterns and log what I'm doing.

Yeah, I agree Ravelry is great for patterns....its just the community side of it that baffles me, and the search function doesn't always seem to want to deliver.

Whereas the other site has a pretty active forum, populated with experienced folks as well as newbies, which I guess is a format I prefer

the book 'knitted animals' by anne-dorthe grigaff has loads of really simple soft toys to knit. most of them are just made up of square pieces or casting off and on again.

I finally got to a wool shop so have some supplies, got a book which has a few animals which shoukd be easy to start off on and got some trial wool, as it is for children I got good quality wool. Hope to start on a frog for my son but would also love to knit something for my little girl also, hope to have something knit for both my children, there is the cutest dress in one of the books I bought but will have to work up to it as it has some complicated knitting in it. I also did not buy enough wool...opps. Thanks everyone.
