Price for tarmac

Guy called to the door last week to see if we wanted our driveway tarmaced. Its been in its current rolled "804" condition since we built 4 years ago. At that time (the last days of the Celtic Tiger), I got three prices ranging from €3,000 to €3,500 for our 260 square metre driveway. I couldn't afford those prices then so we left it.

The guy who called unannounced last week said he was doing a job in the area and could have his machines on-site next day. He said he would have charged €5,000 for the job 3 or 4 years ago but could now do it for €3,500. He's not a member of the travelling fraternity as he has done a lot of work in the area over the past few years. Its just that his "special price" is what I was getting quoted in the heady, pricey Celtic Tiger days. What is the current average price of tarmac these days?

You know the old saying, "Trouble will come knocking on your door", or something like that. I would insist on having a look at the job "in the area" and also the previous jobs he has done a few years back to see how they are holding up.
You need about 3 other quotes to compare.

That's actually expensive. My Aunt got tarmac layed with a machine about 4 months ago. Its 50mm and they charged €14 per square meter. She had a quote of €11 per square meter but they were not going to machine lay it. She decided that th extra € per square meter would be worth it.

Well its not expensive actually. 3500/260sqm works out at about €13.50 per sqm. Less than your auntie paid. :D

However as mentioned, check the contractor out, look at previous work of his, and make sure your happy to proceed. If you don't want the work done or think it's too expensive, just tell him most lads understand.

The guy is legit alright as he's done about 5 houses in the area in the past year and from what I can see, the jobs were well done. Its just that I thought the price would be lower now that we're all broke in the post Celtic Tiger days. Can't understand how he wants similar money to the quotes I got 4 years ago:confused:

Those prices were during the last roar of the Celtic Tiger when everything was top dollar. My point is that I would have thought the prices had been reduced now:confused:

I'm broke alright but I'm fed up picking the kids up and bandaging knees when they trip and fall on the 804 we have for a driveway. Having a smooth tarmac surface for them to ride their bikes on would be nice.

    dave
i have a mate who got a call from someone offering to tarmac the drive
the mate got a price off him and said it was too dear even though he was below any other quotes he got
a week later the mate came home from work to find the drive half tarmaced
when he confronted this man and his buddies he was informed that unless he let the job get finished, they would come after him
and it wouldnt be a solicitor either
he was forced into it as he was intimidated by them
    just a precaution

I'm hot tempered enough that I'd have laid into them there and then and buried them under their own tarmac. I had similar issues with my a$$hole builder who not only was doing a lousy job, but threatened me when I refused to pay him for work he hadn't done (he said he'd send his lads into Dublin to wait for me outside my job and bring me to the bank to get the money) and when I told him I was getting the entire job checked by a new engineer. Lets just say that I went out to the house and had "words" with him that the entire village of Prosperous could hear over a mile away.

Now back on topic, has anyone got a recommendation for a good tarmac layer in north Kildare?

Same here, if anyone can recommend a tarmac company. I've heard far far too many horror stories about driveways falling apart and only an inch of tarmac being used etc etc.

Ya same. Can anyone recommend a tarmac contractor in the Limerick/Cork area?

I know it's an old post. But did you get the job done. If so, I am quite near you. Can you PM me with details of who did it, price, condition now (after a few years) etc. much appreciated

Anyone have an up to date price for tarmac per square metre?

While with tarmac it does make a lot of sense to do many jobs in the vicinity when you have the contractors in town so as to speak I would be extremely weary and on high alert of boys calling to the door to say they will be doing a neighbours drive and they will be able to do yours cheaper. This is an old ploy at this stage and would set alarm bells ringing with me.

I would want to see the work and examine it, speak to the person they done the work for - not a house with a well laid drive way that they didn't lay and the owner just doesn't happen to be home. And ideally a driveway they laid a few years back.

Also when quoting prices people should be pointing of if any additional grounds work was needed, base, sub base, drainage, manholes etc. It will impact the price per square metre considerably as and aside from the area to be covered.

I got some done last year. Approx 420m2 and it cost €6k. 50% of it was SMA and 50% open tarmac. One load of each. 7 lads at work, done by 1.30pm.
Make sure to get SMA and not open tarmac anywhere that cars will be otherwise it will just tear up unless very light traffic with no wheels tuening, just straight line driving.

got the drive tarmac'd 3-4 yrs ago by local reputable contractor ( and neighbor) about 50% of the cost was drainage and ground work.
