Heard over the weekend that the customs and excise are taking inspiration from the gaurds and are fitting cars/vans with cameras that are going to be used to monitor filling stations with green diesel pumps on the forecourts(monitoring the pumps and the vehicles using them, not monitoring the station owners)

as filling stations are private property and most green diesel customers would be regulars to the stations in small villages I severely doubt this will get off the ground as most station owners would not give customs permission to be there for this, thus it would be illegal to catch anyone with this method

I thought this as well but apparantly customs don't need permission to enter private property(I know they don't need permission to enter private property to dip vehicles so maybe it come's under the same legislation). The car I saw had a tiny camera mounted on the rear parcel shelf that wouldnt be seen unless you were looking for it.

I'd have no issue with that. Glad to see anyone using green diesel illegally caught and heavily fined.

Not about being on a High Horse? Why should I pay full whack for Diesel and others get away with using cheaper? Its tax evasion and nothing more.

playing the victim wont help you , by your logic - why should you get to drive a car, theres people in africa who dont even have shoes

People who use green diesel know the risks , a lot of them will get caught , some wont, you shouldnt get angry because somebodys taken a hefty risk that you wouldnt, some people just cant play it safe

    1. How am I a victim exactly? I'm abiding by the law & they aren't. If a politician didn't pay taxes on a purchase we'd be looking for heads to roll. All I stated originally was that I'd have no problem with people using green diesel illegally caught and punished.

    2. Thats not my logic at all; you've twisted it to suit your case.

    3. Did I get angry or did you again throw that in to bolster your sentiments? Read the last line of point 1 again.

    4. I wish I was a renegade so I could live on the edge and use green diesel illegally. Just have to be content with "playing it safe".

customs have more power than the guards. theyre somewhere between the guards and the revenue in the power stakes.

i think anyone using green diesel should first be fined, then the vehicle taken and crushed there and then, and them slap them with a full audit.

its only right. the audit will also catch all the other dodging (??) these people are into.

    THAT will cure the problem.

Seen a MINI Cooper D running twin tanks recently. It's been chipped too and is wickedly quick. Reckon it will be a long timw before she is dipped.

Just as a matter of Interest have many people here been dipped. I am driving diesels for 12 years now and have never been stopped. I have done 160k miles in the last 4 years.

Sorry for hi-jacking thread, (heading off to start new one)

I am driving diesels for 12 years now and have never been stopped but I am sure the minute i throw in a half gallon I will.

. I have done 160k miles in the last 4 years.

Merged your post back in to this thread as it's the same subject.

Keep to the point, evasion of duty or breaking the law will not be condoned. Anyone stupid enough to boast about running on green will be banned. No holier than thou posts or politics either.

I run across these checks at least once a year, especially near ringaskiddy or the ballincollig bypass.

Apologies if my post was misleading. I was just pointing out the lenghts that some people will go to to save money.

I certainly do not condone any law breaking or evasion.

Yes al2009 .............. I see the checkpoints but have never actually been dipped. 2 weeks ago Customs were on the bandon road after the Halfway and had 2 ARU officers complete with guns .
    I was waved through.

    BTW I'm living Blarney side

Wasn't aimed at you or anyone in particular, it was a general shot across the bows before the thread went awry ;)

Only ever been dipped once so far, though I'm only driving diesels for 2 years.

Was stopped in Ennis, on the ring road you'd take to head towards Lahinch, in my '02 Laguna estate. Not been stopped in the Shoggie yet, though not seen any customs checkpoints since buying it either.

Let me get this right, they are going to leave a car with a camera fitted in the back parcel shelf pointing at the green diesel pump???

Even they set up a camera under the canopy or on a pole to monitor the pump surely the stations owner will just not reset the pump for any non-agri vehicles thus causing the person to walk into the shop where they can be 'advised' not to use it?

Been driving diesels for years all over Ulster and a bit of Connaught and never been dipper. Seen them dipping a few times at Carrigallen mart in Leitrim though.

depends on what and where you are driving, I was dipped 3 times this year so far driving the farm jeep, on 2 occasions they were parked up and followed me when I passed

ive never been dipped myself and the lc has never seen a drop of green so ive nothing to fear. But theres nothing but lads running on green around here and bragging about it and the savings to be made .
The father was dipped one day he was parked at the local shop and a passat pulled up and a women hopped out and said she was with customs and she wanted to dip the jeep. But he was on reserve at the time so she couldnt get a sample he came home and after asking him about it he hadnt ask for id and she didnt have a jacket or anything else as far as he could remember but he could have been wrong i reconed they were just trying to get fill out of it.

getting caught running on green just highlights you up the food chain of the revenue where more than likely they'll initially do a desktopp audit on you re your tax affairs and then go the whole hog if something crops up.

i pay my taxes etc etc and it irks the hell out of to hear lads bragging their on the green.

Any trucker running on green should get caught handy enough as they won't be making their VAT returns on the white they should be buying.
