Has anyone any experience with this in the Dublin or Northern Ireland area?

My RS6 gearbox has died and the prices of new ones are astronomical.

Sorry to hear. I take it you've tried a fluid & filter change?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,863 ✭✭✭✭crosstownk

Try Conway Transmissions in Dublin - they are pretty good with autoboxes.

We had an A4 Multitronic rebuilt by Southside gearbox in 2008, cost €3,000 + VAT and had to go back to them at least once.

Wouldn't be in a rush to send you there, and that's not cheap either.

There's a company around the James' street area that does all the Autoboxes for MDL.

With such a rare car, and the well known fault of the multitronic box, I remembered hearing of this crowd in the UK

    http://www.inde-tech.co.uk/multitronic.html

It might be worth your while to ring them to see if they can repair the box if shipped on a pallet and get a local garage to pull out the old box

You just picked this up right? Presume it was private?:(

Something else to consider is to actually bring it back to the manufacturer. I'm not sure who make the Audi boxes, but a member on the BMW forums drove his car to Germany from Holland directly to ZF, who then took most of the transmission out of the car, took it all apart, replaced worn parts and seals, rebuilt it and reinstalled it with brand new filter and fluid for less than €400. Granted, that was more of a service than a repair, but even with that amount of labour it sounds like an absolute bargain to me.

You could ship the transmission to the continent for about €250, something to consider.

    EDIT: here's the link.

Thanks for that! very interesting. If only I were in Holland!

There is a guy up north who quoted me £2,280 all in to get it done. Audi up north want £6,800 all in for a new fitted box!

Dont even know if it needs a full rebuild yet but I know im never lucky with this sort of thing so im assuming it does :(

Thanks for the advice guys, keep it coming if there is any more?

Let's keep the fingers crossed for now, so. I used to have an A8 4.2, and I did a lot of reading up on AT problems at the time. I think, but i'm not sure, that both cars use the same 5-speed tip transmission. From memory, (lots of) new fluid and a new filter can sometimes revive a seemingly banjaxed transmission. Here's a story of an A8 that went into limp-home and was revived: http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/auto_transmission/autotranservicing.html

Good Idea! I'll give a ring tomo and see/pray! thanks

Yep, its a ZF 5HP24A gearbox used by

    1997–2003 Audi A8 (D2) 4.2 V8
    1998–2003 Audi S8 (D2) 4.2 V8
    1999–2003 Audi A6 (C5) 4.2 V8
    1999–2003 Audi S6 (C5) 4.2 V8
    2000–2002 Audi S4 (B5) 2.7 'biturbo' V6
    2000–2003 Audi A8L (D2) 4.2 V8
    2002–2004 Audi RS6 (C5) 4.2 biturbo V8
    2002–present Volkswagen Phaeton (Typ 3D)

As expected, problem is mechanical, no resetting or fault clearing could stop the car going into limp mode. The link gives me hope which is dangerous!

Was a coupe boy up until 5/6 years back then shifted over to the big bus club. Started with a 5er moving up from a 323 coupe. Around the time I started looking for the 7 I was also considering an A8 Quattro or S8. Mechanic friend of mine is ex-BMW and not an Audi lover at all. His words were 'buy an Audi if ya like, but if it has 100k plus on it don't bring it near my garage!' - I didn't!

Have had two Audi's myself - a '94 2.8 Audi Quattro Coupe that never caused me a days trouble bar an MAF Sensor and a '01 S-Line 2.5 Tdi (company car - never actually 'owned' a diesel) that was bought for €8k in '05, spent €4k+ in repairs in two years and was sold in '07 for €4k. Kinda put me off a little. :(

    Is it Adtec Aerauto ?

I would try Pat Cassidy at AutoTranz, located in the Greenhills Industrial Estate near the Walkinstown roundabout.

Stealthy, turns out that gearbox that was serviced by ZF in the post I linked too is the same box as yours, only difference is its the 4 wheel drive version for quattros. I'd be giving ZF a call directly in your hunt for a good price.

My A6 TipTronic Gearbox started giving trouble last year. Brought it to Main dealer on NCR. Told me it would be 6K to replace and that I would be better of selling the car??? Also said the whole engine has to come out. Gob****e. I ended up getting it repaired in the Garage I normally use in Knockmitten for 1500 Hundred euro. I don't know who they sent it too but they knew exactly what was happening before they even got the car.

ZF transmissions and power steering systems remanufactured at ZF Services in Nottingham and genuine ZF parts are available through the network of ZF appointed ZF-DriveCentres. With fixed locations in the North of England, Scotland, the Midlands and Ireland and mobile field service technicians covering all parts of the British Isles, you can be assured of a first class ZF Service experience.
    .

Mentions Ireland on ZF's website, not sure where though.

Try your Audi dealer directly. For RS-series which Audi consider their flagship cars they have a flexible goodwill policy.

I know someone who had a spanking new gearbox supplied & fitted to his 1999 S8 for €4.5k complete with 5 year Audi warranty (inside the last year btw). ZF in Germany will rebuild yours for about €2.5k. When you add in labour and shipping, the new box is actually cheaper.

    Won't cost anything to ask....

    guessing its a c5 rs6?

if so, its a pain of a job. its engine out to get at the box.

unti20 in the wirral do an all in price of around 3.5 stg for the reconditioned box and labour (they do enough of them unfortunately)

usually its a good idea to get the timing belts and some sundy sensors done too while the box is out

take a look over on rs246 as well - there are any number of gearbox threads for the c5 generation.
