    Hi Guys,

Im new to cycling. I can get a trek 1000sl for 350 euros, its orange in colour. How old is this bike? Is it good value for money? I want to get into cycling and ive been told its a good starter bike. Comparing it to Giant OCR's and SCR's what is the bike like? Cheers Guys.

The orange Trek 1000SL (assuming by orange you mean this paint scheme) is going to be either the 2006 or 2007 model, with an 8 speed sora/tiagra mix drivetrain. This is the predecessor to the current 1.2, which generally has a 9 speed drivetrain, due to using newer versions of sora/tiagra. There is one going on adverts here with an asking price of 325, and deise muay thai recently sold essentially the same bike, but in a different colour scheme here for 320.

As to whether it's good value, that depends a lot on condition, to be honest. I have a 60cm model of the same bike that I bought a couple of years ago for 390, but that had seen next to no use. I don't have much to compare it to, as it's my first road bike, but for the most part, I like it. I have ended up putting more money into it since I bought it though, in the form of:
    • changing the crankset to a compact, as the standard double that came on it was killing me on spins in Wicklow. This may not be an issue for you though, either through routes you take, your own ability, or the one you're looking at may have a triple/compact crankset already.
    • upgrading the wheels to Mavic Aksiums, due to a rash of broken spokes. Then again, I'm about 90kg or a little more, so may put more stress on wheels than you would :)
Beyond that the only thing that I can fault with it is the Sora shifters, as to move to smaller rings/sprockets, the thumb shifters are inaccessible from the drops, and can require a good deal of force to release at times. Tiagra or higher shifters provide an additional lever behind the brake lever for this purpose instead, which I would prefer, but that will have to wait until I have a larger budget! Now it may be the case that none of these will be an issue for you, but I just figured I'd point out my experiences with the same bike as an FYI.

PS. This would probably be more suited to the general Cycling forum, perhaps you could ask one of the mods to move it?

Cool, yeah its the same bike as the one on adverts for 325. Is a bike thats 4 years old very old though? The bike looks in mint condition, so for 350 is it an alright deal? Mods go ahead and place it in a different forum if needs be.

Slimjim, I was in a similar position to you a while back and bought a Trek sl 1000 second hand. Paid €380 and can safely say it was the best €380 I have spent in my life. It's a fine bike (if in good condition) and has never given me any problems. It does have carbon forks and seatpost. Not sure if the one you are looking at has these or is all aluminium.

If the condition is good, then it's not a bad price, though given the lower prices on the couple I linked to, then it might be no harm in chancing your arm for a further knock down ;)

The one that slimjim is looking at should be the same as yours, with the carbon forks and seatpost, as the orange paintjob is pretty distinctive, and the 2 years that it retailed, the bike had identical specs, and mine in the same colour has the same carbon parts. I'd agree with the lack of problems alright, as of the 2 issues I outlined having above, one was down to my own lack of ability, and the other may have been brought about by a combination of rough roads and carrying my load!
