    Hi.

I'd love to learn how to play Poker. I am confused by all the different variations. What is the most common format?
Does anyone know an easy to understand tutorial video or write up on Poker?

    Thanks.

Heres some stuff to get you started with No Limit Texas Holdem which is the most commonly played & known game of poker:

Generally idea of position, blinds and betting (flop, turn, river):

I highly recommend this book for odds & probability but you will get all the information online but its a good reference if you don't want to sieve through the internet:

& for tournament strategy have a look at:

There really is endless amount of information on the net, through ever source, also watch the link below & have a look out for different styles of play etc.

Cheers BeanFlicker. What exactly is the difference between No Limit Texas Holdem and Texas Holdem? If you learnt one, would you automatically know the other?

They're many various versions of poker, ie, no-limit & limit holdem, omaha, seven card stud etc each have there different set of rules but are all based on poker hand rankings shown in the previous post.

The main difference between limit & no-limit is the betting. Its a similar game but with a huge difference, in limit holdem a player cannot alter his/hers betting pattern ie, only bet in increments which are generally small & doesn't give the player much option to bluff pots. In no-limit players can bet what they like after each draw on the board (pre-fop, flop, turn, river) once the blinds are met like you would of saw it the 1st video.

I don't play limit hold em as I find it boring & too structured where with no limit its a lot more strategic, psychological & unstructured

    I hope that makes sense.

This might explain it better http://www.pokerlistings.com/texas-holdem-betting-rules

    Download software called pokerstars.

play the 10c sngs as you wont learn anything playing with play/fake money.

Read forum called twoplustwo. They have a beginners section.

you will be better off playing limit texas holdem to start with and eventually progress on to no limit holdem.

It takes years to get really good at one game from scratch where you make minimal mistakes.

Cheers GoldenBoot. I run GNU/Linux and ran PokerStars (designed for Windows) in WINE. Everything seems to work fine. To be honest I just want to play poker for fun and not gambling.

Reading is the best way to learn before you jump into playing for real cash

And playing online with practice/play money is a decent way to learn, though the sense of risk is lost when not actually using real money.
