The 'recession', in reality.....

I've just been reading through a lot of posts and there seems to be a consensus of disgust among all Irish people about the political set-up now. It's getting a bit ****ing irritating to be honest. I'm almost at the point of saying that if you are not actually doing something about it, then please, PLEASE, shut the **** up and get on with your life.

The fact is that very little of us are going hungry, and we all have a place to live (there's always been homeless, I'm not saying everything's perfect). We are absolutely privileged as it is, even during 'recession'.....even if you're on the dole.

All of my Irish unemployed friends are living the 'life of Riley'. Living with parents, paying no rent, buying what they like with the dole money. What's the problem? These guys don't want to work, and can't work. People are still buying ****loads of crap they don't need and getting locked all the time, then complaining about the lack of money. I'm just not seeing any result of the 'recession' bar people just being ****ing lazy.

I'm perfectly aware Boards.ie gets posts like this every day, but still...do other people see this trend at all?

I was abroad for a few years and came back 7 months ago. When I first got here I applied for 3 jobs, got 3 interviews, got third job. I left that job then found another job in one week after sending one CV. Now, I have never been to college and only ever worked in ****ing cafes and bars. I'm currently in IT now.

People who tell me they can't find a job are simply too precious.

    There, I'm done being a self-righteous prick.

But you're failing to see something here, because of the recession my neighbours can't afford to go to Florida for 2weeks this year! It's totally unfair!

The recession is only an offline phenomenon

You're obviously not living in the real world OP. There is a lot of genuine hardship out there. I know a fella who had to sell his speedboat just so he could afford his annual family ski-ing holiday this year. God knows what will happen in the summer.

I'm so glad that some people have been so lucky to find work practically immediately... we moved back here two years ago after studying at university, and have tried exceptionally hard to find work. We don't mind what we do - hard physical work, any work at all... but there's no-one employing around here ;) It's a very difficult and unpleasant situation, and not one we want to be in (or *most* of the other people we know for that matter!)... I hate the guilty, embarrassed feeling I get whenever I go to the post office to collect money, or the dole office to sign on... I feel like apologising for being alive. I hate that, and would do *anything* to change it - but I can't magic a job out of thin air.

We certainly never complain about the dole money - it is fantastic, we are cared for far better here than we ever were in the UK after leaving university, it's given us far more self confidence and far more self respect. It has also made us desperate to find work, to put something back into the country that's offered us so much.

    xx

Yes, because your lazy friends are obviously a true representation of everyone in Ireland. Some people are happy to live on the dole. Most aren't. I was on the dole for 3 months and I don't want to go back on it. It's horrible.

Not only that, but if your friends are living at home, that means they have little to no bills to pay. Again, not like the majority of people in Ireland. Just cos your friends buy anything they like doesn't mean everyone can. I had to move home recently because of the possibilty of being put on a 3 day week in the next few months.

Maybe we are privileged. And yes, most of us aren't homeless. But it still doesn't mean that there aren't people really struggling to make ends meet. To find jobs. To try and support their family. To enjoy a comfortable standard of living.

Well, I've been around so I'm not making this opinion based on the fact I live under a rock.

Thanks for the opinion-altering replies. The onion is truly peeling for me.

Hey, this is my life man. I struggle to get by myself. I live in a box and work sometimes 7 days a week full-time......and I'm happy. Most people consider this suffering, but it's what most of the world is experiencing.

    Nothing is a cakewalk.

But some people can't get into that position. I know a lot of people who have been turned away from bar jobs because of their qualifications, because the employer is worried they'll leave as soon as they find something better.

Not everyone is you. Not everyone is in your situation. You can work 7 days a week and live in a box. What about families? What about people who simply can't do that? I could work 7 days a week. My old job I used to do a lot of shift work, maybe 72 hour weeks in some cases. But that is not the same for everyone.

Well done you on making it seem so easy. But it's not easy for everyone. And that is largely due to the recession.
