    Hi guys,

The stupid petrol gauge on my car is obviously faulty and my car ran out of petrol the other day. I managed to chug along to a petrol station, put more in, but now sometimes the car wont start at all or if it does, it chuggs once in a while.

I assume dirt and particles got lodged in the filter when it ran out of petrol but im useless with cars so i was wondering if someone could recommend a good mechanic that does call outs that could fix this.

Plus , anyone know of how much this might cost#?
    UPDATE

Ok guys, this has gotten worse now.

I was told to try turn the engine on again and drive for a bit and let the fuel get to the engine. So i turned on the car, the engine chugged for a few seconds and the car started. I ran into my house for all of 20 seconds and came back out and white smoke/steam? perhaps was billowing out from under the bonnet of the car.

Its an old car, 96 rover 414i. am i better off cutting my losses? will i end up paying more to get this fixed than a second hand car?

Any help on what this could be would be greatly appreciated

Just bring it to a garage. Also you haven't mentioned your location so you won't be getting many recommendations me thinks ;)

    Oh yeah, LOL

    Citywest area is me.

I dont wanna chance driving the car to a garage, firstly in case it stalls. secondly, it might not start :)

plus i work office hours which makes it more difficult.

Perhaps your assumption that the petrol gauge was faulty was not correct. Perhaps the car was cutting out due to low compression. Have you checked the oil and water levels?

After running for twenty seconds after starting from cold I couldn't see coolant boiling though. check all rad hoses etc for leaks, again I can't see much heat being generated after 20 seconds.

Did you drive the car much since yesterday?

the car wasnt driven much at all yesterday. no more than 5 minutes. and when i say 20 seconds, probably best to say 60 seconds. but seriously i got a fright, cause it happend so quickly.

i opened the bonnet and on the upper left side it looks like water burst or something, it was all over the left part of the engine, and when i checked the water in the windscreen wiper section thing( dont know much about cars) it was simmering, like it was boiling

Are you sure that wasn't the expansion tank for the coolant system?

I'll just assume this means Dublin, if not I have a few guys in Galway that call out.

If your interested I could pick your car up for you for €30 ... as your just the other side of the N7 from my garage.
Then I can check what the problem is - no fix no fee!

Unfortunatly its very doubtfull that your problem has anything to do with petrol.:(
